Tether as a Kill Switch

I'm going to make the jump and add a tether to my Pro this year. I've looked at some old threads on tethers for the Pro. I would like to use it as a kill switch much like the XM has. I think Doo set that up well. I would probably remove my key switch so I don't have to worry about dealing with it. I have a Polaris tether on my IQR and I don't think it's really intended to be used as a kill switch all day long

I like the ProDesigns option.

I found an old thread where mountainhorse posted a ProArmor version, but I can't find it on their site now (the link is dead).

Anyone using a tether that works well for a kill switch?

I was reading up on that yesterday and it looked like there were some people having issues with that style tether in the snow environment. There was a post started by Paul_Aris I will try and find and link here for you to see.

I installed a prodesign tether and use it as my kill switch. Completely removed my kill switch. Never had an issue with it not working. IMHO the issue with it working/not working is dependant on how it's mounted and whether or not ice/snow is allowed to build up on it.

We sell around 150 Pro Armor tethers a year and I have used one for 3 years. The Pro Design are a very similar design but I have not used one and it does not sound like the Pro Design is as reliable as our Pro Armor's have been. We have good sources for factory connectors so a Plug and Play Pro Armor tether would not be hard if there's interest.

I did a search on your site for "tether" and didn't get any results. I didn't see it listed under products. Can you give me a link?

Our current line only offers tethers for the Yamaha's also including Roll over valves. Since the 4 strokes require a relay on even our plane tether, a Pro tether would be much cheaper. We are developing more and more Polaris Parts so I could have Polaris Plug and Play Pro Armor tethers as soon as the end of the month when Pro Armor can get us more inventory, if there is interest.

Ill buy one for sure if its plug and play

Damn I just purchased two new rubber ones because they're the only plug and play I know about until now

Make a bunch plug and play and sell the heck out of them

Well we decided to double our stock order of tethers and make Plug N Play Polaris Tethers. The wires will be covered with a light flexible sheathing with adhesive heat shrink on each end of the sheathing for a clean durable installation.

The Pro Armor tether will fit either 7/8" or 1 1/8" bars.

We are promised our tethers by the end of the month and we will have the connectors before that so they will start shipping the beginning of September.

$49.95

I will post the direct link on the site in the next couple days and we are also working to clean up our sled specific sections on the site so all Pro Parts will be in one section.

Thanks for the input guys!

I have a pro design and I originally thought I was having snow and ice build up causing it not to work but found out later that its just junk. Doesn't work all the time thawed out in the shop.
It's mounted plunger down on my handle bars in case someone wants to tell me it mounted wrong... Theletup totaled his sled last year because the pro design failed. Plenty of peeps on here have had no problems with them but I think a tether is something that should work 100% of the time no questions asked.

If you still have a key turn it to on and pull key out, Polaris has done this forever (00 800 RMK ) stow key so you have it. Nice if ya leave it outside the bar, motel , cabin etc.
Polaris tether is 5 min install on Pro.

A reliable tether is extremely important as you have stated. A tether that doesn't work is pointless. This is why we use the tether that we use and it has been tested year after year. Also why we've been waiting 3 months to get them, if I could switch brands without sacrificing reliability I would for this very reason.

Now that being said, there is no component on a sled that is 100 percent reliable and even the best tether in the world does not replace safe practices. In the aviation industry a redundant system would be used when it's a safety device. But I don't think many would want to clip two tethers or test them both regularly to verify 100 percent reliability. For example if you were to spray any moving part with water in 0 degree wether it's going to freeze. But we have a system that has proven extremely reliable and that's why we use it.

The key comes out after it is set to 'On'? I won't do the Polaris tether because it is too difficult to reset all day long. That's why I'm looking for an alternative.

Use my stock Polaris tether as a kill switch all the time. My experience with the Poo stock rubber plug-n-play has been flawless. The key stayed in the on position from the factory for almost 2 years.

BugIto I'm wondering if I'm missing some advantage with the other tether versions? Thoughts?

I have 4 sleds, ALL have the PRO Armor tether installed now for 4yrs and NEVER an issue...

I have used the Pro Design model and it failed mid season...

I'd be in for 2 if they work as well as you say. Price compared to the polaris one?

the PRO Armor tether is BAR NONE the best tether on the market...you can get them on ebay (they are universal design) and sell for $30 shipped..

all you do is splice the 2 wires on the tether to your wires on the key switch (of coarse depending on model of sled, but the Polaris IQ takes mins)..

you will not be disappointed

here is how I mount ALL of mine (lower left of handlebars in pic)

Wow, that looks like pilot's cockpit with all those controls!

Like I said, I have the Polaris tether on my IQR. Granted that sled is a little tougher to start, the tether drives me nuts. If ice gets in the rubber, it's not so easy to "seat". I just felt that I would likely be off and on the sled a lot during the day and didn't want to deal with it. Maybe they aren't as bad as I thought though.

Ha, and I was thinking maybe I am just lucky? I fly off my pro every once in a while and land various places on the mountain filling the rubber piece with snow, ice, bark, pine needle pieces, my own blood, chipmunk teeth:) who knows exactly, but I just grab the tether half way up the red cable and swing it hard against the handlebars once or twice to clear it out before plugging it back in. It has always worked fine. I see these threads every year on this and always wonder if I'm just plain missing something?
