Ten Commandments for a Responsible Pet Owner as dictated by the pet.

Ten Commandments for a Responsible Pet Owner as dictated by the pet.

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2.Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4.Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainments. But I have only you.
5.Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
6.Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7.Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, and yet I choose not to bite you.
8.Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9.Please take care of me when I grow old. You too will grow old.
10.On the difficult journey, on the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there. Because I love you so.

Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them. Life would be a much duller, less joyful thing without God's critters. Please pass this on to other pet owners.

Very, Very well put..... Thanks for the post :beer;

Dogs definitely have a way of grabbing hold of your heart without you even realizing it.:face-icon-small-hap

#10 almost made me cry :(

it's true though ....

i swore I wasn't going to let my dog die alone, and I didn't ....

I just wish she was still here :(

I had something similar sent to me when we lost our 15 year old cat. It saddened me, but made me feel very good that I was there with her at the vet at the end, and stayed with her afterwards for awhile.

VERY touching.......and so true!

We now give our love to our pups, and I'm thankful for them every day!

Thanks for posting this. I'm going to print it out and hang it up. :beer;

With you there....Fetched tears to my eyes remembering everyone that I have been there with. Love my Animals.

Great post ZC!! Our little Angel (her name) is our first pet, and only child. I never would have really understood how people could be that upset about loosing a pet until having her. About half of those 10 choked me up; I can imagine how Dogmeat and others felt. We got Angel when she was a few months old (she is now 3 yrs. old). I dreaded having to have her spayed, but was told it would be better for her health. I found out about an upscale pet hospital several hundred miles away, where a highly qualified lady vet did lazer surgery spaying. It was in at 9, out at 3, with no stitches, and has no scar! She was good to go as soon as the drugs wore off (next morning), and she wasn't stiff or sore (you'd never know she had anything done). Just wanted to pass this on, as there has to be other qualified vets doing lazer surgery too. I'll post a pic of her on the sled. Yes, she does short rides,and will help drive!

Thanks for the great post, this one hit way too close to home, as I had to have our oldest of three "girls", put to sleep the end of January, the 21st to be exact. Definately one of the hardest things I've had to do in 42yrs. She was over 16 yrs old, and we got her from the pound when she was about a year old. We had her as part of our family for the majority of the time my wife and I have been together.

We don't have "children" in the most common way, but our girls are our family. I'm happy to see so many others that appreciate the love and loyalty that a furry family member can provide.......

RIP...Yeska, beloved family member Jan 1, 1994-Jan. 21, 2010....

As most know, I lost my husband. And my baby girl (my catt) died at 18 while I was sledding. Drakke was an amazing cat. Critters bring so much to our lives. I adopted two kitties 3 days after Drakke died and I love them.

I just got a little dog and it is great. It is amazing how good they can make you feel. He made my anti-dog girlfriend pro-dog in about a day. Taking him for a walk right now...

Animals are special. Anybody that has no room for them, has something missing inside themselves. Like Dogmeats post. I hope I am the person my dog thinks I am.

Very true , but even worse in the case or Tara...our 11 y/o arthritic malamute that my girlfriend accidently hit with the car, taking something I forgot to a friends place for my elk hunting trip. (he was leaving later) I should have been there for both of them
