Temp Control question

FYI, You will need to get a plug at NAPA and plug the small bypass return off the side of the thermostat. Only connect the top two to the rad's, and the bottom from your head. You never get up to temp with it circulating. We did extensive testing when we found this KTM Thermostat last year. When you block it off, you still get light circulation through the thermostat. Then it will modulate and maintain 160 degrees on the roads or in the pow.

Has anyone had problems dead heading the water pump, other than what seeps pass the thermostat itself???? I installed the bypass and like you said, did not warm up the motor....so for the hell of it I installed a pressure gauge in the bypass hose and plugged the hose after the gauge. With the motor at 130, thermostat still close, I increase rpm and the gauge would spike to 30 psi. Granted that pressure is only confined between the water pump and the thermostat, can that pressure blow out any gaskets ect., in that area???? Am going to restrict bypass line to 1/8 inch hole to try to reduce pressure spike but if anyone has already tried this please chime in.

No problems blocking the bypass nipple. The brass thermostat itself has a small hole in it just for circulation. You can see it if you look inside with a flashlight or disassemble it. When we were first testing this unit, we opened the radiator cap, let the engine run and monitored temps with a heat gun. When the thermostat is closed, you can watch the small port in the brass unit itself flowing a small stream of coolant. Then when the water temp reached 160/168 degrees, the thermostat opened. Works very well.

So once yours is hooked up you on have plugged one end correct? Because on my yz there is one line that runs from the head into the radiator........ Which means I would plug the other end (which means 2 ends would be plugged) or t it into another line? Sorry my local shop was zero help....

Rookie question - What is the risk associated with not running a T-stat? The reason I asked is that the T-stat that I was told to buy is on backorder until 12/28. I'm heading to Togwotee on 12/12 so I will be running without it.

Will it damage the motor? My KTM runs hot as hell so I don't anticipate issues, but I'm not sure..........this is all new to me.

Any tricks or advise would be appreciated.

thermostat magic

not magic to any of these thermostat housing, when I put a yam raptor thermo housing on the wr45 it was just cheap and available, i looked up two styles from Polaris that would work. Just drill the thermostat itself so a little flow goes through all the time and you don't get air trapped at thermo.

No thermo, we ran cardboard zip tied on radiator of 010 yz450 worked, just need to be mindful of conditions, if you start grinding along in slow wet mush at slow speed, pull some cardboard.

I ran a valve on some ealry yam water cooled sleds that did'nt have a thermo and just turned down flow when it ran toooo cool, worked fine, just need to be aware of what you're doing.

This what we all use up here in NW Montana.... works great.

Do you have a picture of the connections? I bought one and want to put it in tonight but cant figure out where the 4 ports plumb in. I got the track and everything on OK but am stumped by this. its kinda embearassing:face-icon-small-blu

This has been my question... The way I understand it is that you put it between the head and radiator and plug two ends so it is a straight through. Can someone confirm if this works? They say it will still let fluid through even when closed then will open fully when it needs more cooling.

I really appreciate the picture that really helps;) Now you don't modify that in any way correct and coolant still trickles through when it is cold?

no mods

i didnt do anything too it. i never opened it up to see if it has a small hole in it but i guess it does. didnt run too long and i could feel the heat on the top side so it was flowing. just need to get the voyager temp sensor fitted into housing so have a temp gauge too.

I use the effex temp stickers in the summer and they work well... I don't know about the winter yet but that is a cheap solution. Thanks for the help.

thermostat

You always wonder ? No bypass Yam raptor thermo on my wr450 working great.

Gave it the acid test last couple of trips out, warms up quick so cold starting in the morning you don't need the choke very long. Yesterday pulling hard all day in crotch deep new sticky powder, bike absolutely covered in snow stuck to everything, left hand radiator at every stop melted out and clean, not the case with the other bike and no thermo. So pretty hot water hitting the left side radiator, but going back into the engine pretty cool as the right side radiator was pretty snow packed all day.

And by the way the raptor thermostat I used came with Yam stat with hole in it. When you drop the thermostat in, there is a cast hole/recess that the stat hole needs to line up with, just a little Yam overkill.

Need more heat

4 of us rode in Cooke city. 4 ft of powder atleast. All w thermostat on bikes. Radiators taped off completely Water temp gauges in thermostat housings never read over 100 degrees in powder. These bikes need to run 180 degrees to keep alive.
We need to come up with a engine blanket to keep snow off engine cases and we r on it.

So with the bypass fully open and no flow to the radiators the temp was still only a 100 degrees?? WOW ! Mabe a valve in the suply to the radiators to force more through the bypass?thats why I wonder about the bikes without bypass as even with the stat closed flow to the radiators is still moving cold water back to the engine through the little hole in the the stat ,where the bypass system does just that bypasses the radiators completly, the down fall to the bypass is when the stat does finally open I guess it could cold shot the engine,Im also looking at the foam that they use as a mud guard iin the skid plate, mabe I use that around the cylinder head, it will eventually freeze and make a blanket around the engine till it thaws

guage'n it

not suprised, I am going to install temp guauge on my wr, still doesn't seem like its hot even with thermo.

I did put a bra over the left side of my engine made out out of doubled layer of pet screen you would use for sled side panel screens. covers the side of my engine and back over carb, was hoping it would prevent snow on my carb and carb icing. Might have done that, I had no carb icing issues that I know of sat in 3 ft of chit. Tom put on a wide skid pan on hi 010YZ, got to say breaking trail in deep fluff his motor was way cleaner than my wr with no wide skid pan.

cr500 stat

This has been an interesting thread to follow. anybody out there installed a stat on a cr500? I've got a ktm stat but not sure how to go about getting it installed. I assume the coolant flow is out the top of the head to the top of the rads ect. but not sure.

more cold snow

after several weeks of trips in cold deep powder, its evident that my wr450 could use some more water temp. I covered the left side of my engine in pet screen and that has kept snow off my carb and no carb icing. Last week end I covered the lower right side of my engine and covered most of my right side radiator.

An improvement, first time there was enough heat in my left radiator to keep snow melted off it every time I stopped. I beginning to believe you could cover this whole engine and still not have to worry about overheating.
