Tampico Snow Report 2011; part 2

Saturday, 01/15/2011

:frown:Slushmobiling report - This morning, Kid #3 and I rode the lower Jackass, lower North Fork, McClains canyon, Whites Ridge, Middle Fork to Treephones and Red Saddle to top.

All the roads are in decent shape grooming wise. Lower Middle Fork has some chop, but not to bad. Jackass still has snow cover, few icy spots on Red Saddle. Snow depth is fairly shallow up to 5000+ feet. This morning on the North Fork we were the first set of tracks. Watch for a large tree that is hanging over McClains canyon about a mile from the top, looks to be partially broken near the bottom.

Current Conditions (snopark) @ 1440 are rain, temps in low 40's. We are expecting rain in the amounts of .75" to 1.75" by Monday morning; current snow levels are at 7-8k. The 2 week extended is for some cool down:amen:. Parking lot is plowed, but very icy.

As of this time, no road problems for flooding, but the area is under a flood watch.

Sorry I couldn't give you guys better news.

Sunday evening update - As some of you are aware, water was flowing over the road this morning about 5.5 miles up, due to an ice dam under one of the bridges. The road and bridge are still intact, but there was some serious shoulder erosion for about .25 mile. I believe a big thanks:face-icon-small-hap goes out to either the WVFD or the Yakima County public works employees for clearing the jam. The creek by me broke loose about 1403, quite a sight, like a dang tidal wave coming downstream!

It rained all night and most of the day, light showers now. At 1430, the temp at the parking lot was 38F with rain. The parking lot has not broken through yet, so it was still iced up at that time. :face-icon-small-sho Now for the shocker, at that time there were no rigs in either sno-park! Nada, zilcho! Probably the first time I have ever seen the lots empty, on any day, not to mention a weekend. That means there must be lots of untracked slush for the new week!

Green Lake snotel has lost 20% of its depth over the last 3 days (about 10"):tsk:, has not been below freezing for 4 days:face-icon-small-sad, and spent 6 hours today over 40F:frown:.

I probably won't post again until we get some new snow. It does cool down some starting Tuesday.

Quick update:

No new snow yesterday at the sno-park. The Green Lake snotel is not showing any new snow, either.

The good news is that the melting has stopped; Green Lake has been mainly below freezing since Monday morning. The road is in good shape; sno-park is probably slick as heck. Based on what I see, I am not sure if Jackasss is still snow covered where it switch-backs up the open face. Fourteen day forecast is for normal to slightly above temps, and below normal precip. Monthly forecasts come out tomorrow, I still feel February and March will be good.

Just a quick report from someone who rode today (AB, some really cool dutch guy)-

Went up Red Saddle, over the top. Red Saddle icy, hard to keep cool. No new snow on top, got better as it warmed. Middle fork down.

Better in the afternoon as things warmed up.

Roads were in pretty good shape.

Green Lake snotel has been near 40F since 1100; I wonder if this is correct, the temp has seemed overly high this week and we are getting conflicting readings depending on how it is viewed.

Forecast is fairly warm and dry the next 2 weeks.

The updated seasonal forecasts (as of 01/20/11) are still calling for cooler and wetter than normal from mid February to early May:face-icon-small-win.

We can only hope!

we need snow bad!!!! I will be staying home until we have at least another foot to a foot and a half. Nice meeting and talking to Tampico today. Conditions were solid ice everywhere, even at the highest of elevations:face-icon-small-sad

We had about the same conditions at Sec. 3.... hard as he!! and difficult to keep cool..... sounds like it's just bad everywhere....

So much for the banner year we were all promised:face-icon-small-dis

I saw trees poking up in places I didn't know there were trees that I have been riding for the last 3 years:eek:

.

NOT

That's It! I'm breaking out the KTM. Heading to Mabton tomorrow for some Motocross.

A good May ride in Jan.

i had a pretty good May ride today. i put on about 52 mi. there were atleast 10 trucks in the snowpark. it was slushy like most May rides but i still had fun exploring and going places ive never been before. i think some of those new places will be alot of fun with some feburary snow.

Hey Snodawg,

Small world, those 2 kids in your first picture are my nephews! At least they had throttle time today:face-icon-small-hap!

Accuweather calls for more snow and colder temps in...12 days? Jeesh, I may be mowing my yard at 3k elevation by then:lol:!

I will be updating the Ahtanum fundraiser thread with new information within the next 10-12 days concerning the legislature and what may be happening next year. If anybody has any questions, feel free to PM me.

Snowing at the snowpark this evening, and had a little snow this morning. Total of probably .25", but at least it is a start. I was out last week, so I have no idea of what the current trail conditions are.

Forecast is for clear and colder this week; hopefull of changes next week.

Ski-Bender Meeting Tuesday night at the El Rincon at 7pm.

Groomer meeting this Wednesday night at the Naches Ranger Station (backside) at 7pm.

Thanks for the update Tamp, great seeing you at lunch yesterday, sorry about not hearing you..... D has been trying to get me to do something about the hearing, but I figure "Why"? Anybody worth listening to knows to get my attention (now :face-icon-small-ton) and if I can see ya' talk it's the same as hearing ya'. . . right?

Thanks again for all the hard work!

Anybody ride this weekend, loked like some freshies up on top saturday night.
Was planning on riding this next weekend with my oldest boy, just curious what happened this weekend.Thanks.

Anybody wanting to try the new Barker Motorsports Turbo system for the Doo 800R motor is more than welcome to tag along next saturday and hop on for a pull or two.We will have two different set-ups up the Ahtanum sat.One with a 163 and one with a 174.Drop me a pm and we can line something up.

It was awesome for a june ride. Now if we can get back to feb snow so we can have a good feburary ride I will be much happier. Solid ice from the snowpark up about 3.5 miles then a couple inches on top of ice till treephones then about 4-6 in and it was all wind blown up top. When climbing you would hit crust then powder then crust then powder u get the idea. I still had fun and managed to get 48 miles in. It was worth the trip just not quite feb snow but I still had a good time riding with good people. I got the chance to ride a pro rmk and I liked it but the snow conditions weren't that great I want to try it again with real snow. But I think I still like my cat more.:face-icon-small-hap

Yes, it was SOLID ice the first 3 miles, definitely the hardest trail I had ever ridden. From there on it got better and decent on top depending where you were at. As Summ8rmk said, it was good for a June ride. The trees were the safest bet for good snow, most of the open areas were blown off. All in all it was a fun day with good peeps, looking forward to next time and with better snow. The snow park is all gravel till the berm, we need some snow down low BADLY.

Thanks to the 3 guys above for their above posts. The snowpark got about 1-2" today, Green Lake Snotel was showing 5"+ of new. Forecast looks much better for next week.

My main concern is the snowparks losing it early (it usually goes downhill in the Ahtanum from about Feb 20th on), and then having to much gravel for to far of a distance=cluster this early in the season.

Hoping to ride this Sunday.
