Tampico 2021

I expect gravel at the parking lots this weekend.
Trails should be fine after the berm.
10ft at the flagpole last weekend, probably settle down to 9ft this weekend.

I have been watching posts this winter too. I lost a couple of ride buddies so sold sled. Thought I might get another but haven’t seen much activity on this site. Was hoping to see if a guy could tag along if showed up at snow park alone

My opinion,
It would be best to hit up someone on here and ask to ride with them instead of just showing up and ask.

The parking lots have plenty of peeps every weekend.

Is this the same snow measuring post? The trees certainly have grown if so. Photo taken Feb, 14, 2010.

That is a different post.
Not sure where that one is.
I have never seen it.
@94fordguy made the Tampico post. I forget when it was raised. 2012-2013?

The 6x6 post with the flag is at Tampico just south of the Super Bowl, I built and installed it in November 2013. It's currently on it's 3rd flag in that time.

The 4x4 pole without a flag is at White Pass at Section 3, Pinegrass Ridge area. It was installed as a 10ft pole in Fall 2008 and during that season it was realized that 10ft wasn't nearly enough, so the 2x4 was added as a quick after-thought to increase the pole to 20ft. It's been on my to-do list to replace that with a taller unit. One season I saw 15ft on the post at White Pass so a 16ft pole would be plenty...

This is the White Pass post @ Section 3 - Pinegrass Ridge... Summer 2008 going into the 2009 season. I'm hoping to get time to re-do it this summer once the snow melts... can't believe it's been there for 12 years! The funny fact out of it that makes it kinda relevant to the Tampico thread, the current flag pole at Tampico I actually built to replace this one at White Pass, which I was then planning to bring over to Tampico. The timing didn't work out to get it done and the 6x6 wound up finding it's home at Hourglass hill at Tampico. I'll expand on that in another post here.100_1147.JPG100_1754.JPG100_1757.JPG

So as I mentioned, the flag pole that resides at Tampico was originally planned to replace the shorter pole at White Pass. In the 5 years that the White Pass pole had been up, the most snow we had seen on it was 15 ft and that was a really good snow year, so that's where the idea for a 16ft pole came about. Knowing that a pole that tall would need to be in the ground quite a ways, a 20ft timber was going to be needed to keep it from falling over. The reason it didn't wind up at Section 3... a change in riding habits, we simply didn't ride Section 3 nearly as much as we once did and wanted a nice one at Tampico.

Between busy schedules and an early winter, there was actually already a good amount of snow on the ground by the time I was able to get up to the mountains to drop off the pole. I wound up having to ditch the pole off of my truck about a mile away as there was too much snow to drive any closer without sliding off the road. The next weekend we went up on the sleds with a shovel and digging bar, retrieved the pole out of the trees and towed it with my sled the last mile or so into the right spot. A buddy at the time helped me dig the hole 3-1/2 ft into the ground, attach the 6ft aluminum pole and flag, and stand it up to plant it.

Using a router to cut in the numbers and a skillsaw to make the lines took some time, but it still looks good as new. The rough average we have seen on the pole has been around 7-8 ft through the last 7 years, I believe the low year (2015) was an average of 4-1/2ft most of the season and the highest reading has been around 12ft or so.100_2135.JPG

Red saddle parking lot still has great coverage, whites ridge trail head is all gravel.

Snow berm is still up on middle fork however the gate is closed. Trail is mostly ice for 3.5 miles up to whites ridge road.

Snow is not bad above 5k.
Still ~9ft at the Flag pole.

Gravel and mud up to the closed gate.
Ice for 3miles, a few patches of gravel but not bad. Lots of exploring to find the good snow but boy were we rewarded! [emoji16]20210320_154144.jpg

As of yesterday the new lot is all gravel up to the gate, mostly ice with short spots of gravel the first 2 miles up middle fork, then mostly hardpack snow (nicely groomed smooth) from there up. Its melting fast down low. I predict 2 more weeks of it being accessible from the bottom before driving up the road will become necessary. Still 9 ft up high, definitely becoming spring conditions, but it was snowing off and on through the day.

Lots of snow melt the first 2 miles.
Not worth going until they open the gates and u may want to chain up, ice is solid.

Not much new snow, that storm was up north.
