12/29/2017 PM Tampico update

:face-icon-small-sad AS of 2100 12/29/2017 just below the Tampico Snopark; the rain is starting to quit, things are freezing up and the road is very icy and a little rough - will be dangerous in the morning.

We have been away for a few days; since that time we have only had around an inch of new snow followed by a whole lot of melt. I have huge new puddles in my yard, and worst of all, our creek is high and muddy - never a good sign (especially in mid-winter) that things are melting up high with a decent amount of runoff. We are probably now down to 3-4" of snow.

They were going to try to groom today, but the heavy rain and ice made that illogical. From what I hear, DNR has closed the roads to prevent damage.

The forecast is for cooling temps, but still no major storm on the short term horizon. The 2 week extended is for cool with below to normal precip. However, the melting should slow down and stop over night.

As a side note, I hiked last Friday up to about 4200' elevation, and I was walking on dirt up high most of the time. Again, not the norm...

This is not a great start.

Please remember to drive carefully, especially until the road clears up. It is extremely hazardous at this time - and will be for the next couple of mornings...

I will post again when conditions change (hopefully improve...). I will try to update the thread more often when I can.

A lot of people went up. . . Will anyone post conditions?
The road is ice from the fire station up.

What we have here is the highly elusive creature known simply as corduroy... It is very skiddish and will disappear quickly when encountered by large groups of throttle junkies. It is an extremely rare and lucky chance to see Corduroy without any marks on it... something that should be appreciated and treated with respect so it may live as long as possible. The typical lifespan of Corduroy in the Tampico area is measured in minutes... lifespans of over an hour are highly rare!

Wife and I ran into that up there last year....first tracks all day!

It was so awesome (and not taken for granted) that I stopped several times to take pics of it, lol.

Anyone been up in the last day or so? Is it worth trying to go up on Sunday?

A friend went up Thursday and said it was horrible, raining in the afternoon and snow was bad and very thin everywhere.

Went up Saturday. Road was ice from the snopark to nearly treephones. No new snow up on top, but still fun to go riding.
