Ahtanum Rd. Closed to Through Traffic, Saturday, 02/11/17; hence no Ahtanum access

-The Ahtanum Rd. West of Slavin is still closed to Through Traffic on Saturday, 02/11/2017. It is open to local traffic only. This is due to the flooding which occurred on Friday, 02/10/2017. This means that the Ahtanum Winter Recreation Sites are basically unreachable. This information is from the Yakima County Sheriffs Office at 8pm, Friday, 02/10/2017.

As of 2:30pm on Friday, water was still running down the road and over 1 bridge.

I have no idea when it will reopen to all traffic. Hopefully, this is a short-term deal and will be fixed by next weekend. The road was not washed out, but edges and at least one bridge may need to be inspected.

No grooming was done last night or is scheduled for tonight.

I will update this when I learn more, and hope to do this tomorrow night in time for Sunday, 02/12/2017.

I will not "hog" or tear up any of the formerly powder snow that is now buried under the 0.5"+ ice crust....Trust me, it is nasty walking through this stuff...

Tampico update, Saturday 9pm 02/11/2017

No change in Tampico status (at this time) for Sunday. Barricades are on North Fork rd. just past the fire station. Road is not that bad, so hopefully this gets resolved early next week.

Reports of snow conditions were icy with 3-4" of windblown new above 5k elevation.

Should be more new snow at higher elevations for later next week.

Tampico Update 02/16/2017

-Road is open and in good condition. Most of the compact snow and ice has melted off.

-Had lots of rain Wednesday night (at least down low); Ice crust is still present - but has mellowed with all the rain. The snow has settled a bunch (but, hey, THIS IS A BASE:face-icon-small-sho...)

-Forecast (at snowparks) is for snow:face-icon-small-hap this weekend (mainly Sunday) into next week. Temps will be in the mid to upper 30's (mid-afternoons)

-Grooming has been continuing, so the trails should be in pretty good shape. Any downhill runs will probably be pretty fast.

-Green Lake was at 38F today at 11am. It has lost 10" of snow since earlier this week. No new over-night, with nearly 2" of rain (according to the snotel; it may have snowed but melted out underneath). Green Lake snotel was last under 32F last Monday, 02/13. That alone is pretty dang crappy...

-Mid next week should be pretty decent...

-Next weekend looks to be below normal temps and normal to below normal precip. March outlook is for normal temps and precip. March - May outlook is for normal temps and slightly above normal precip. It should be a decent late riding season.

-Extra funding has been allocated for the other FS snowparks, so plowing conditions should be better than last weekend.

We were in the Clover Flats cabin last week and could not believe the garbage left behind! I don't understand these people. Thanks for hauling out what you could.

The snow was awesome yesterday? Wish I could say the same for the grooming! Teeth rattling moguls from the berm to tree phones & yet the DNR managed to get everything plowed around their cabins.

grooming schedule

I believe the DNR has very little input with the daily or weekly grooming program, they may provide minimum guidelines.
The groomer has most of the discretion based on snow, weather,
and equipment. He is encouraged to follow a schedule or guidelines
monitired by the grooming cordinator and the yakima county grooming counsel. My complaint is with state parks, they do not keep the grooming schedule updated or accessible for the users. There is a
complaint form available on Wash state parks winter rec .wa .us.
hope that helps

They were doing good at grooming at least once a week, but not lately. We went up the north fork and back down the north fork yesterday because we knew it would be smoother. Hopefully it gets groomed a few more times this season, there is still some riding to be done.

I rode Tampico middle fork today, first time in a while. It did not look plowed, pretty rough to clover flats. Correct me if I am wrong, The grooming program is not out of money for the year, less used trails may be cut back. The snopark plowing fund ran out and borrowed from an equipment reserve acct.. But tampico is not dependant on that, snopark plowing is on the DNR, bonus for us. Wish I could answer the tampico grooming ??
