Synthetic Oils...........

I guess I'm really curious as to why I hear and keep hearing about rusty crankshafts and crankshaft failures from synthetic oils? Even with motors that were properly "fogged" for summer. Not so much with Cat, but with the other brands...... Top engine builders (I'm not throwing anyone under the bus) saying synthetic oils don't seem to protect an engine like the good old fashion petroleum oils do. Top Engine builders saying there were never as many CRANKSHAFT problems and RUST problems as there are now with the new synthetic oils compared to cheap old petroleum oils that we used to use. I have heard this from more than one source and more than one specific oil........Anyone with some solid insight?

Your exactly right

Legend zx2 sr is a hybrid oil and is not synthetic. Sythentic oils are bad for 2 strokes cause the sythetic molecule does not burn which causes blow by and synthetic oil also makes things rust. Legend does not rust at all.

Ever wonder if the crank problems are more from high h.p. twin engines? If you go back a few years power output was way lower and triples where used a lot more. I know that my cpc 1150 was way harder on the crank than is was when it was a 900.

I smell a fight brewing. I know i find moisture on the guillotines on my skidoo that could be causing rust been told moisture on them is normal the heat causes condensation as the engine cools. I dont think synthetic oil or not alot of moisture causes rust.

Actually discussing oils is so lame that this thread will probably get deleted if it gets out of control. It was no surprise to me that Elvis chimed in right away to plug his Legend oil

Oil, rather it be Synthetic or Mineral does not cause rust nor does the oil rust or make engine components rust

Condensation is typically to blame and normally happens during the season change (spring/Fall) or moving your sled into the warm 35-55 degree garage after riding. Mineral based Oils do provide better rust protection and most pickling oils used on aircraft are mineral. In fact most aviation oils are mineral or synthetic blend for the purpose of rust protection in the cylinders and to maintain a good seat on the piston rings avoiding blow by.
