Super charger or turbo????

I know that this has been beat to death but I will ask again. I am coming off a t Apex to a nytro the apex had plenty for me and then some. My plans are to keep the nytro a 153 in the stock form I love the sled its like it was built for me. I have rode a powderlites nytro great power kinda loud (my Apex was stupid loud did not like that aspect at all) and it ran very nice and this was at 12 lb of boost. My choice would either be a powderlites kit or a charger MPI from hartman. I also rode a nytro with a charger on it I was sure I was going to do a turbo till I rode the charged nytro. I dont want to open the motor up and I dont want to butcher the sled. I would like the most lite weight nyto I can get with about 230 hp. The big hold up for me is that the rb3 box that Dave has seems like it will be the CHIT and his customer service is top notch. I have heard so many horror stories about mpi and their service and the dobeck contol box. I dont want big power wont use it and I will never climb the big chute mostly small hills and a lota boondocking. Thanks again MIke And Brent for the test rides you guys gave me a lot to think about.

well if i buy anything in general id go for the customer service and powderlites like you said is top notch and you probally will never be able to find a guy who stands behind his product like dave thats what i've heard from many people and people on snowest...

Well I was lucky enough to ride the same sleds as you, and it seems like you answered your own question.....customer service.
though I would take either one of those guys sleds in a second.

Ultralord,

Glad we could make it more confusing for you!! lol :D

I would wait a little...Dave is working on the RB3 box for S/C...he said he has one in his shop right now. If he gets the RB3 box dialed in for the S/C, it will be even better!! You could get the S/C kit from Hartman so it will include the blow off valve and upgraded fuel pressure regulator, then add the RB3 box from Dave and be good to go.

Food for thought.

No worries...BTW...turned out my boost gauge was off by just over two points ...when you rode it she was only making 10lbs while indicating 12...:D...have a new boost gauge now.

Do what's right for you...my preference is obvious from my choice...pump gas and 12lbs works VERY good. My guess is 10lbs is around 230+hp at altitude...way safe on pump...

whos kit MOB?

Lookin to get the powderlites/RB3 setup on the apex this summer! 13lbs was 298hp on race while 12lbs on pump was 270!

Timing pulled with pump gas is making more HP per lb of boost! cant wait!!!

Running Dave's Powderlites/RB3 setup on the Nytro...VERY happy with it...per your comments above...:D:beer;

How is this one going to be compared to like the NW turboworks turbo, it puts out 8 to 10 pounds of boost giving around 190 horse. It should work if a person doesnt really want a terrible amount of boost.

You will probably hate your stock 153 maverick nytro if you hit much waist deep pow. I did mine, (spent more time shoveling than the rest of my group combined.)go to a 162" challenger X and you'll think you gained 20hp. Pretty easy task to install a head shim and adjust timing. (except you have to strip the front end off the sled and remove the engine, which actually isn't as bad as it sounds.) I've had great customer support from Tom Hartman. His stuff works and he's great to deal with. If I had gone to a SC kit it would have been from him.

I was looking at my service manual at the specialty tools, Does it take a fancy tool to remove the engine to install a head shim, any help would be great.

I am going to wait a while But I am lucky ran accross 2 real good guys to help with the R&D for the clutch stuff. I am sure I will do the track just kinda dont want to kill what I like so much About my nytro how nimble and light weight it rides. BUT I have never had it in any serious powder I am sure I might change my tune by next Jan or Feb. BUt if you can stick the skis and get 80mph track speed :D

Geesh!! Would you make up your mind already!!!:beer;:beer;

You need to ride my Apex now!!! You might have to go back!!

allen at timbersled has them figured out as well, is building one for me stage 2, 14lbs (i figure if im going to buythe good fuel, i aint going to kill it by mixin it)

He has no quifs with the MPI box??? what are the main problems and what makes Daves box so great??? (if i have problems with my box im in BC)

Alan built mine also...the MPI (Dobeck) box works, but the RB3 box has more adjustability. AND, it allows for the timing to be adjusted as the boost goes up. The Dobeck boxes only allow for fuel to be added.

The RB3 box also allows for multiple maps to be stored, so you can switch back and forth depending on your needs. Another thing guys are starting to do is run a Parker Knock Box in conjunction with the RB3 box, and when it senses detonation, the signal is sent to the RB3 and it automatically switches to an alternate fuel/timing map so you dont blow it up.

Dave said you can have two maps on a flip switch, pump/race if your running say on pump with the knock box and it deto's I dont think it can switch maps to even less timing can it? Or is there something that I dont know?

Not sure of the details, as I haven't talked to Dave about it, just what I was told by someone running his setup.

Two maps...Map 2 is triggered by grounding a connector...switch can be manual or could also be via knock box sensor triggering the switch...

i was curious bout that new rb3 every one talks about it but they dont really say why its so great you guys shedded some light on what they can do but i think powderlites can tell the rest...

I was looking at my service manual at the specialty tools, Does it take a fancy tool to remove the engine to install a head shim, any help would be great.

Engine comes out real easy. Pull all body work, steering post etc. Eight bolts and the whole nose and front suspension comes off. Engine is wide open after that. Recommend a sled stand and engine hoist (or a helper). You have to remove the engine for the timing adjustment otherwise you could probably get the shim in with-out the tear out. Piece of cake if you are reasonably mechanically inclined.
Drop me a note if you have any trouble.
