Summer Garage Project

Epoxy coat that floor brother. They look great and clean up is a snap. Oil, grease, water, winter crud...........BAM! It's clean! :face-icon-small-win

Best improvement I did in my garage.

Q - Do you have problems with the floor coating getting chewed up with carbides...even if just falling off the rollers while wheeling the sleds around inside the garage?? That's why I haven't done the flooring yet...worried about it not holding up the greatest to sleds...

Anyone else comment on flooring options?????

Was thinking possibly the Lowe's garage floor paint they sell so that wherever it gets dinged/nicked/scaped I could just throw down another coat over the top???? Anyone have experience with paint versus epoxy??

I too was skeptical about durability as I am pretty rough on the garage floor with all the work on motorcycles, sleds etc. I have to say I am amazed at how well it is holding up, have even ran carbides across it by accident...lol.

2 years on it and still not showing the wear (except for tire burn out from motorcycle):face-icon-small-con

This is what I used and added the epoxy flakes. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-EpoxyShield-2-gal-Gray-High-Gloss-2-Part-Epoxy-Garage-Floor-Coating-Kit-251870/100671422

Thanks for the information man! I'm leaning towards doing that one in the tan color. What'd you do as far as prep is concerned???

There is an acid wash that you can buy with it, check online at the above link and you can see it. Put down acid wash, rinsed it out and waited for it to dry and painted it. I was amazed it has stuck as well as it has.

Oh, I also bought the "traction" addtive as I was worried about being slick.

I don't know if this counts as a "garage project" but it certainly brightened up the room:face-icon-small-ton...now off to Vohk!

Once we get settles into our new digs I will begin my workshop

The concrete in my garage was in great shape prior to coating so cleaning was quicker. Here is the process

Pressure washed floor - scrubbed any grease or oil spots with Dawn solution.

Rinsed floor with garden hose. (It's all about water volume to get a good rinse.)

Squeegee floor........wait to dry. It takes a few days.

When you think it's dry. Duct tape a piece of Saran Wrap to the floor (all 4 edges) If it fogs or gets cloudy overnite.........its not dry.

Once dry, begin your coating process. I used the solvent based product from Rust-O-Leum. For about $100+ per kit it is great.

I coated relatively heavy in a two car garage and still had some left over in my bucket. You having a 3 car will require 2 kits.

The water based kits are a bit easier on the lungs but the overall durability and longevity is not there IMO.

Start to finish my process took 4 days. With most of that being dry time. Durability is quite phenomenal. Yes, I've scratched the coating a bit but it is by no means ruined. To prolong the life of the floor with sleds I use wheels as much as possible. My sled lift has wheels as well which helps.

I used the rust oleum too. My garage is over 1000 sq ft so it took two kits. Cost about $250 with rollers, pans, etc. The carbides can streak it up, best thing to do is get a sled dolly. Their about $200 but makes moving sleds in and out easy and saves your floor.

I did mine when the house was new so I didnt use the etch. Just powerwashed it out and rolled it on. Took me about four hours to do it all. Well worth it though

I've ordered Swisstrax Ribtrax and it'll be here this Tuesday. I'll get some pictures once I get time to install it...my wife just gave birth to our first child and it hasn't been an easy time for baby and mom!

More to come...

Looks great! Congratulations on the baby. Best of luck to you, your wife and the new addition!
