Stuck Overnight In The Snowies

Also need to send a huge thanks out to the guys that helped Tog9 out from lakie Marie. They took him to Snowy Mtn Lodge, then sent Kody in after me.

Tog9 is a trooper to have made it all the way out! The SPOT and additional survival gear is on order!

From someone thats "been there, done that" I would suggest a couple other items to get out of a spot like that.

100ft of climbing rope.
Sled jack.
Small hand winch OR heavy duty ratcheting strap.

The sled jack comes in handy MANY times when your alone or only have one other person to help lift/pull.

The 100ft of climbing rope and winch saved me from spending a night out twice. The winch was bought at menards and it holds up. I removed the steel cable it comes with and put Nylon strap on it. It has 20 ft of strap and then hooks to the 100ft of rope. The winch is rated at 1000lbs, the 10mm rope is 1500lbs. Both together weigh about 8lbs and fit in a small bag.

Just something to think about.

Oh yeah, I do cary snow shoes when the snow is good. Eric

Tog, Kody and I retrieved your sleds yesterday. We dropped into 7 fools from the west pushing snow up to the w/shield. Worked over to where the creek drops in, from there we snowshoe'd up the creek about a mile. Even with snowshoes on we were sinking in over are knees and once I went in clear to my chest-way deep! We located the sled in the creek, the only thing sticking out of the snow were the handlebars. Took about 3 hrs of circling the area to locate the 2nd sled, again the bars were the only thing sticking out of the snow. We had actually walked within 30ft of it on the top side and hadn't spotted it, on the last sweep coming along the creek from the bottom we spotted it. Took us about an hour to dig it out and get it to creek below the other sled (we'd dug it out earlier) Kody did one hell of a sidehill down the creek and crossed back over. We had to shovel out some flat areas in the banks in places, but after a couple of stucks and some fancy sidehilling we got em down into 7 fools. Shuttled them up to the road and the pulled em in to Kody's right at nightfall,we started out at 9:30 in the morning. The only casualty was the black helmet, it went into the creek during Kody's sidehill!

You guys rock!!! Looks like you had a heck of a battle getting them out, thanks a ton. I am the "other guy" with the sled in the creek.

Not worried about my helmet! Also have a call in to Kody to send out a huge thanks to both of you.

In addition to what we owe you, we'll need to hook up for a cocktail soon when we are out there.

Thanks again!

Hey Dan

Can't thank you and Kody enough. This is why I enjoy sledding so much, the people out here will do anything for a fellow sledder in need. Again I appreciate it. Will hook up with you soon, well as soon as I can feel my toes and fingers, hopefuly a few weeks and this will pass.

Thanks

Shane

Shane, thought it was kind of strange we didn't see you at the Avy class. Alot of the things you wrote about, Mike goes over in the class. Looking forward to getting together, heal up and get back out here. Dan

I was riding the snowies from the 2nd to the afternoon of the 8th. Been out there a few times now and would like the know the cordinates of the location. Also what is the area called 7 fools?

Sounds like a few cases of beer might be in order for recovering some sleds.....

That would be one heck of a deal. When I was in that situation a couple years ago we hired two locals to go back in with me and my buddy to get out 4 sleds and they charged us 1500.00 for 10 hours of their time. Sounds like you have some good friends and knew who to talk too. Eric

I don't have the GPS coordinates for that area, 7 fools is located east Lake Marie down the draining of French Creek. There are a couple of ways in--one off of trail t off of Libby Flats, the other way is just around the corner from Marie. Like others have stated it can be very unforgiving, it can get very steep and deep. Thus the name of 7 sleds being left in there yeas ago and the folks walking out.

Holy chit Dan! You and Kody are the men for sure :D:beer; You both have my utmost respect as does Tog for hiking out of that. Tog, see you at the avy class tomorrow....;)

That's awesome you guys could help out some fellow sledders like that. I'm glad everyone got out okay, equipment can be replaced but lives cannot.

We've thought about heading down in there several times but have never had the gahones as we knew the "7 fools" legend and got skeerd I guess.

IF, they'd have a SPOT, who or what would have responded in that exact scenario and how long would it have taken? Would you have to pay for the rescue or is that covered?

At what point do you decide, yup, this is an emergency, and we need help rather than yeah it's cold and I'd like to get out of here rather than spend the night?

The SPOT for $8 measly dollars a year covers all search and rescue fees and if your over seas covers fees from a US Embassy closest to the country you are in. If you dont originally sign the extra $8 a year and try and add it later its $100 and some change if I recall correctly per year. I have had mine for a little over two years and dont travel anywhere without it. Used the help f(x) once when a truck broke down and thankfully have never used the emergency. If you are on the line do it. I am 21 and my mom and dad are much more at ease when i leave knowing that I will check in 2-3 times a day. Just the fact the people that care about you wont be as worried was enough to make me spend the money.

Glad to hear that everything turned out okay!!!!! Have known Kody since the fall of 2000 he's heck of a nice guy and knows the snowies like the back of his hand .

Shane and I now both own Spot's. Although we had some faith in Shane's distress signal watch (should, the darn thing cost him 10K), unfortunately it did not work.

With the SPOT, I'm sure we would have been out of there my midnight, and yes we would have used them becuase we had NO idea how far it was to walk out and whether we would have made it. Luckily Shane was able to make it all of the way out.

Tried my spot last night and it worked flawlessly, my wife loves knowing that I now have one as well!
