Stuck Overnight In The Snowies

Great post. I carry alot of the items you mention in both your lists. But I'll add some stuff and listen to your voice of experience.

Curious about "pulling the pin" on your buddy's distress signal watch. never heard of it. Can you direct me to more information on it.

1. It was one of those $1.50 pieces of crap space blankets. I know have several heat sheet, don't bother with the $1.50 tin foil sleeping bag:)

2. The "pull the pin" deal is he owns a $10,000 watch, the ones pilots wear. Not sure what frequency and don't care as it did not work. By a SPOT and don't bother learning about this watch.

3. I also now have in my survival pack. Extra socks/gloves/balaclavas, hand/feet warmers, wind up flash light, regular flashlight with extra batteries, additional protein bars. I am well prepared if it happens again.

Be safe!

Agreed. The three that spent two nights out had people looking for them the first night when they did not return home.......

I was told there was 8 different search and rescue groups looking for them plus all the riders. But Again, the boys Mom told me that "They were just going for a trail ride." Thats it!!! Not any direction, what trail, or how far. You NEED to let someone know where you are going and when you will be back. Then stick to that plan.

beacons, where to find them

we are going to the big horns this weekend and don't have beacons.
do you know if they rent them in this area?

Not sure, I recommend calling out there and asking who might rent beacons. I recommend to rent a SPOT Messenger as well if possible.

I know that having a survival pack in the back of my snowmobile is very important to me. I have spaceblankets, fire starters, etc. A shovel is very important too as if you are in deep enough snow you can pretty much build yourself a pretty decent shelter next to your sled. Socks are something I don't have extra in but will start carrying now. Gloves and hand warmers are a must also.

I am pretty sure I'm going to buy a spot now too.

Wow.........I missed this previously! Good points for those wondering about they should pack with them.

VERY glad it all turned out ok!! :)

I always carry some extra clothes, and in my emergency kit I also have candles. You can wrap up in a emergency blanket with a candle down by your feet and it will keep you warm. You can also heat a snow cave comfortably warm with just a candle. Plus it's easier to light a candle and then use it to try and light a fire than it is to light a fire with just matches or a lighter.

some great ideas, i tend to pack alot, one thing i did was buy a food vacume sealer, it is suprising how small a downfilled jacket is once its vacum packed, i doo a spare flees shirt, underwear, socks, they never get wet and take up very little room, i also care a road flare sealed up, they work great for starting a fire, essecialy if the wood is green. great post

giddyup

Yah, bought one, can't wait to use it this season :)

This all happened because you guys are a bunch of bastards. I can't believe I follow you guys around every mountain in Wyoming. Your're probably going to get me hurt one day. If we ever have to spend the night, we're sharing you're fancy schancy "bivvy sack" because I can't afford one. I have to buy a tractor.
See you guys at the end of March. BTW, riding was awesome yesterday. I went up by myself for the day. Nobody drove me off a cliff or got me stuck in a creek. It was different. Later.
