storing av gas /100LL

This is a two part question?looks like I will have about 3/4 of a barrel of 100ll left over if it is sealed really well and kept in a cool dry place will it be good next fall.Also can I leave the 100ll in my sled for summer storage and does it need stabilizer in it.I don't want any carb problems next year so I will empty the tank and put in premium with stabilizer if that is better for storage.Thanks for the info

100LL will store just fine without losing any octane or "varnishing" Avgas is what I put in my turbo to store it for the summer instead of Stabil.

The key to gas storage is an airtight container (which should be as full as possible!), and stored in a cool dry place.

If its still in a drum your fine, but plastic cans do not store fuel well at all!

In Northern BC I was told that AV Gas didnt have a shelf life so it not even stocked. We have to order a barrel from somewhere else so IMO that stuff won't keep the summer. Race gas i have stored over the summer many times in my shop and in 50/50 mix had no problems.

Next time you buy a drum of avgas check out the fill date... It was likely filled 6months prior unless its a fast seller in your area.

All fuel can be stored for years no problem, it just has to be done right.

One big issue with avgas is not the fact that it doesnt store well, but if its actually going to be sold and used in aircraft they have some pretty strict rules on its storage and handling. Up here they even have to drain the fuel out of the trucks hoses every night to prevent contamination!

Qeustion have you heard about using Toulene as a octane booster? I have in my shop as paint thinner i think for John Deere Yellow.....

Yes, it is supposed to be one of the better 'home brew' octane boosters. though ive never bothered to try such a recipe...

I buy my av gas from the bulk plant they fill the drum the day I pick it up I just got this one last week and thought i would use it up it's not looking like it now.thanks for the info

In the seasonal float plane biz the fuel sits in the tank from mid OCT.-mid MAY and then used during the summer months with no issues, I would not worry about it.

exactly. fuel in a bulk tank does not magically reproduce in there by itself. that fuel that they used to fill that drum has probably been sitting in that bulk tank for 6months+, not to mention the 6months+ it has sat in someone elses bulk tank!

I have been flying floatplanes for almost 30 years. I have stashed fuel in remote locations for years in steel drums and used it in the airplane after a three or four year hiatus without problem. On the other hand, i have stored race fuel mixed with oil in a plastic container, and had it separate and be unusable over just a few months of storage in the summer. Avgas is more uniform and stable. I would not hesitate to re-use it after only a summer storage in a steel container.

yes, steel containers are a must!

Plastic breathes (air kills fuel) and they also pass light (which is not good for stored fuel), they should be your last resort for storing fuel for more than a few weeks.

Not race fuel. It will lose octane when opened up and not used up. Av gas is good for a year or more

Do NOT add anything to it, just top off the sled and walk away.
Oh, please keep the sled itself out of direct sunlight too.


The reason some of the race fuel blends seperate fron the oils used is alcohol.

some OILS have enough alcohol in the base stock to cause seperation.

A fine example is Blendzall, even thow it says it mixes with all gasoline, it does fall out of suspension and CLOT in c-14 ,c-14+ and c-16.

I have two barrels of c-12 unopened and still sealed. It will be stored in an outside shed completely out of the sunlight. Will c-12 keep or should I just burn it up in the summer toys?

It will last for another season just fine..
Most dealers for VP store the drums in semi trailers outside year round..

was actually speaking to my buddy the other day (manager of an aviation fuel distributor up here) and apparently they are allowed to store 100LL up to 5 years before they are not legally allowed to sell it for aircraft use!
