Stampede avy

I was there when it happened, there was LOTS of wrong, we were on the other end of the hill below the spot where the guy that set off the avalanche went up.
there were 14 people there, everyone was wearing a beacon, most everone had a shovel and probe , we all got to the location where he was burried within seconds.
Gotta say I`m proud my son was second guy there. He is the one in orange jacket on video.
There was no crowd, the other 8 guys stood back to give the 3-4 guys there room to work.
We didnt get beacons out because the guy that set off the avalanche and then ran over him could hear him yell help even with his head almost 2 feet deep! and he was off his sled and found him right away, he was also the guy who yelled for shovels- after the guy was safely breathing
Lucky.... who gets burried and unburried in less than a minute?
There were several guys there that had avalanche training.
I gotta say there were the right guys there but it was VERY lucky the way it played out.
The original go-pro video is almost 3 minutes long and shows a bit more including him being dug out with shovels ect......

yep alot of bads and alot of goods, I am sure alot was learned from it and all is good. several years ago a guy was killed at blewitt pass due to another guy going above him in the same way and he was above his sled, and the avalanche pushed him into his sled and ended up killing him. I heard the story when I was new to sledding and when I see this I think of that. I will say for the guy who started the avalanche he did do a esxcellent job getting to him and getting his head uncovered

what were you thinking?

That vid should have never been given to the news media. They will only use it against us....:face-icon-small-fro

It disturbs me that they were yelling for shovels....Your shovel should be WITH YOU IN YOUR BACKPACK!

Slide force

It's amazing how much force the avy had right at the end when it picked up the victim and sled and tossed them into the static sled. The slide was basically done at that point but still had enough force to pile them together with the victim trapped underneath the tunnel of the Arctic Cat. It shows that the snow density was really high when it came to a stop, making any movement and the ability to draw a breath impossible. Very scary if you think about the situation he was in, even if for a few seconds.

From the second angle you can see that the first guy there was in a really bad spot. Backed up to trees in a run out zone. Big avy he would have been pushed back through the trees. Both riders involved were above him. I would not have parked there. That wet dense snow has so much power. Much more than a semi truck moving that fast. Glad he is ok.

I'll admit...on a hill that small, even with high avy danger, I don't think most people (including myself) would be on high alert for something like this. This is the kind of stuff most riders stick to when the hazard is high to stay OUT of harms way.
This was more of a freak accident, but obviously it shows us that it can happen any where at any time!
Not even sure the other rider could see his buddy on foot until he was above him?? I know that's no excuse, just saying this could have easily happened to any of us, even the most careful riders.
I think we all set off little slides like that on a fairly regular basis and think nothing of it.

Avalanches are NOT freak accidents, they are predictable and were predicted that day. No matter how small the hill, if it is loaded and the right angle, it will release. Most riders that ride that terrain to stay out of harms way are not trained or they are using their training incorrectly. This is not something that can happen to "any of us" it is something that can be avoided by all of us. Hopefully some people will learn from the mistakes made by these guys, training is only as good as you use it. I am very glad that the outcome was good, but most of the time these situations dont end well. Thanks for posting, I am not trying to pick on your post, just trying to push people to get training and use it.
