Speedometer all over the place

Ok, so i searched and cant find my answer so i will post a new topic.

I have a 05 900 fusion 121, and two years ago had the stator repaired from RM stator because the sled would run until warm and then die

Anyways now my speedo has started to bounce all over..the digital RPM looks ok, i thought i herd something about too much grease in the speedo houseing can cause this?? but some others say possible stator...hope not that wasnt fun

So my question is, could this just be me using too thick of grease or too much in there?? will it work its self out??

i seriously doubt its anything but the speedo housing/sensor.

i would remove the speedo housing, clean it rally good, get some new grease and check it again. might have some gunk on the speed sensor.

also check your wiring from the speedo housing for any bad connections or rusting in the connector.

The wires run right next to some sharp edges, you could have a short that would case a bad signal to the speedo from the sensor. Check the wires in this location for shorts.

sounds like a short sending false signals to the speedo. The wires right above the speedo sensor next to the ground are in a very bad location for chaffing and causing a short.

While your cleaning speedo housing/checking wires, also look @ cogged speedo gear bolted on end of your driveshaft, check for damage, loose bolt. Those cogs pulse the magnet on speedo housing. Sometimes these sensors just go bad, for no reason in particular.

Must be a flatlander. I never have time to look down at the speedometer because I'm looking where I'm going!!! I have mine on RPM anyway which I don't look at unless I'm on a trail then I'm only looking at the temp. That thing could be bouncing all over the place and I'd probably never notice!

all great info, so what colors are the speedo wires?? is it that big plug in the pic? also where is the ground running too?

Finally what is the cost of a speedo sensor if all else fails? or does anyone have one sitting around

yes i am a flatlander...in ontario...hard to find mountains out here to ride however we have been pelted with snow this year and i have been riding in over waist deep pow all week!

I had this same thing happen to my 05. Didn't notice until I looked to see how many mile we had put on that day and it was at about 1000. Not cool. I just disconnected it for the ride out.

The three wires you see running vertical go to the speedo sensor. Doesn't cost anything to do a visual check on them. It's pretty easy to pull the sensor off their to take a look at it as well.

part that mounts to the shaft is #5136619 That number is a substitute for the original so maybe they had some problems with it. $43.94 from polaris part depot

Part number 2410376 is the speed sensor pickup $46.15

Awe you s***!! It's been 10 below up here in Alaska. Too cold for me to ride. Snow has been OK but I'm waiting for a little more. Too many stumps and rocks right now.

At least you have snow. It's 56 degrees in AZ. I can see snow on the mountains but it is a long way away.

man never thought about that..with the speedo being whacky..i am really racking on the miles in a trip then eh.....so for now should i just unplug the wires?? will it tun with them unpluged?

anyone have a used working condition sensor they want to part with?? Just droped a boat load of cash into sleds already this year

also is the brown wire the ground?? should i pull that off and clean it up aswell??

Brown is the ground. It never hurts to clean the ground or add additional ground wires on a fuel injected vehicle. If you take it off just lightly sand where it attaches and lightly sand the connector and bolt it back together.

what about unplugging the speedo for now? anyone have thoughts on this?? I know the hours will keep running but with the speedo jumping with the miles jump too?
