Speedometer all over the place

OK, I have been reading all the posts saying grease the speed sensor which made no sense to me because the sensor they use would be interrupted by the grease. It is a magnetic hall effect sensor and grease on if will cause it not to work.

I searched and found exactly what I was looking for on another forum. Speedo worked perfect then the guy greased the hell out of his front bearing and the speedo quit.

Pull your cover and clean off the trigger on the end of the shaft and wipe off your sensor and it will probably work.

Not sure how to prevent this in the future because the sensor sits in where you grease it. I have a feeling some types of grease such as polaris waterproof grease may affect it less.

Just got confirmation on another 900 with the exact same problem. He just pulled the cover and there was so much grease covering the sensor that it could not read the trigger. He was using Mobile synthetic red grease and it messed up the speedo.

One other thing to watch out for, some greases have metallic additives in them which could also give false readings to the sensor such as making it read additional triggers and showing higher speed and more mileage that you have actually gone.

The above 900 was mine!! Checked it according to manual and I believe it is bad. I have the correct voltage coming to the guage from the harness. Should be 5v dc from the harness on the red/white wire. Check the brown for continuity to ground. Then hook up hall effect tester (pn 2871745) to the light green/red wire on the sensor and spin track. If the light blinks the sensor is good. I just used a low voltage light tester to do the same and got no blinks. My concluson, sensor is bad! :face-icon-small-fro

Just because you unplugged sensor doesnt mean the sensor is bad. All you did was disconnect the sensor so it wont read anything weather it is bad or not. You must do the tests like I gave directions on to dertimine if it is sensor or other things. If you want to spend $60 and hope that fixes it then go ahead but I would rather take 10 minutes and make sure.

Another Speedometer....Must be a 900 Virus

Well, finally got enough snow to warm this thing up...and I notice I've got a speedometer that is dancing all over the place.

Funny thing, I used low temp snowmobile grease...Not Polaris and this just started happening. I wonder if you are all on to "something" with the use of non-Polaris grease and the speedo sensor gumming up with grease.:face-icon-small-dis

I will check my wires tomorrow. Does anyone have a picture of the speedo housing attachment to the drive shaft area. Still new the sled and I am getting my knuckles bloody and all the pics and direction are extremely helpful.

Can you elaborate on the "Hall effect Tester" - do I need it or can I use the "low voltage light tester" and achieve the same result.

I just need clarification on the if I need the "Hall effect tester"...What is the cost?

Sorry I didnt respond, been busy with kids ball schedules. I am not sure on the Hall tester as I just used a low voltage hot wire tester. I also used a multi meter with same result. I have not replaced my sensor yet as I am not in the mood to spend $60 on it. We have snow and I chose to put that $ in my gas tank! Did you get yours working?
