So, Wasatch County Court is corrupt

back in January I got a citation for not having my out of state decal on my sled. (The tags got washed off when I washed my sled at the carwash) I had my receipt, but it was in the side door of my truck which was in my truck. Which was parked in Heber City. I tried explaining that to the officer but he felt it necessary to cite me anyway. Then he proceded to tell me that the fine was only $40 (lie #1) then said that if I were to call in to County court with the receipt that they would dismiss the citation (lie #2).

So I call in after 2 weeks and got "Little Miss Attitude" on the phone who told me that this was a serious offense and that it was a non reversible offense, even though I had proof of purchase. She then tells me that the fine is $150. WTF?!!! I refuse to pay, of course. So then she cops a bigger attitude with me and asks if I would like to schedule a day in court. Great! I schedule that day for today.

So I go in this morning and after listening to an old man ramble on about some legal mumbo jumbo for about 45 minutes, court starts moving along. finally he gets to me after issuing about 25 FTAs. So he asks me how I'd like to plea and I say "Not Guilty", then he pulls a calendar out and starts to schedule a trial by jury. I say "Your Honor, there is no need to do that, you will be wasting the court's time and the people's time, I have my proof of registration here with me." He gets all bothered and says that is not how things are done here in Utah. We have trials here he says. WOW! So I ask How it works, he says I have to schedule a meeting with the DA and then we go to trial. WTF?!! Now I don't have time for this crap, so I ask to change to no contest thinking that if he views my sales receipt from Maverik dated January 1, 2010 (I got the ticket on the 10th) he would dismiss the charge, like any other judge would in any NORMAL court of law.

He looks at the proof and then acts like he's doing me a favor and gives me a "deal" Instead of fining me the $150 he decides to suspend all but $65. Now what choice do I have? If I ask to reverse my plea, I'm going to lose another day of work and 1/4 tank of fuel to drive up to this dipchits courtroom just to beat his stupid charges. So I pay his $65 fine and he says "I detect an attitude". I answer, "you are right". He asks why and as I'm signing my paper with his clerk, finalizing my "deal" I say in front of the entire courtroom, "I just don't like getting railroaded". He was pretty much speechless except for saying "I'm sorry you feel that way"

So, needless to say. I paid a $65 fine for purchasing my $30 out of state registration, showing proof of it and then having to go buy another $30 decal to avoid another citation because I HAVE to have a decal on my sled. A receipt is not good enough.

That, my friends is MESSED UP!

The papers are in my truck but I have his name, the rude little clerks name and the officers name outside.

PJ welcome to Utah LMAO! sorry buddy that really sucks but utah courts always screw you, even if you get it dismissed you'll pay. I got a ticket for riding and OHV on public roads well the cop never saw me riding it! I was sitting on the road on it with out it started talking to my brother. Had the dash video prove it so the ticket got dismissed but I had to pay court costs! (which is what you probably paid) I have had this happen too many times every time I proven I was not in the wrong and every time I ended up with "Court costs" which where usually around 60 to 80 bucks. Sorry buddy guess it go's with our zoo tax :face-icon-small-dis

Sorry about the mess PJ. I think we've all learned something about Wasatch county jurisdiction at least once. I wont even begin to tell you about a car accident we got in in heber once....wth these people think they live in mayberry or something. It will be exposed how bad it is some day soon, it will catch up to them.

you could of taken one for the team and punched the judge in the face....would of made the news, they would of got the real story....thus the justice system exposed:face-icon-small-hap (after you spent a night or two in jail)

sucks!

Wow that sucks, especially considering you had the receipt.

Guess it's time to buy stickers since mine expired Jan. 30th. Yikes.

Don't wash your stickers off!:face-icon-small-sho

Just kidding. That does suck. I don't have time to tell you about the animal control officer in wasatch county who wants really, really, really badly to be a real cop. :ohwell:

So, you don't follow the rules and you are now upset with the consequences. :face-icon-small-con

Sounds like you should have remedied the problem immediately by getting a new sticker instead of blaming everyone else for your mistake!!

That being said, the court system here and everywhere is a joke!!

can't you take your receipt in and get reprinted stickers....at least save 30 bucks. I know in MN I have lost my hunting license and for like 3 or 5 bucks I get a new one printed.

I laughed when you made your comment to the judge....perfect timing and well done!!!!!!!

WELCOME TO UTAH..... Last season I had one beer at a friends house watching a hockey game and decided to head home out of Park City. No mind you I have out of state plates that do read SkiBum but it was snowing that night and me being the winter driver Iam just drove the speed limit because I was in control.

Bam... Cop pulls out behind me and follows me just until Im outside the Park City boarder. Pulls me out of my truck claiming that the truck smelled off booze and has me do the road side tests in a tshirt since I didnt have a jacket. Oh and pulled me over because my "plate was covered in snow" which was a lie it was clearly visible. So long story short I blew a .02 and got arrested because I had 2 weeks before my 21st birthday. Got to jail and ask the cop how much it would be to get out he said a few hundred dollars LIE! Bail was set at $3500 or a 0.02.... So I then asked the officer at the jail when the judge would be in he said tomorrow morning at 8 so I figure why post I can just wait it out and plead not guilty and its already 4am so I get into my cell and wait.... IT WAS SATURDAY NIGHT the judge doesn't come in until Monday.... So its around 5pm Sunday when I finally got bailed out by my room mate... what a horrible night it was with drunks and such.

Story ended with me hiring a very well known and costly DWI lawyer from Salt lake... $4000 and he came to court walked in talked to the prosecutor for 3 minutes then the judge for two and the court threw it out. I had to pay 200 and stay outta trouble.

UTAH HATES OUTTA STATERS lol

WHAT??! I followed the rules. The cheap azz decal fell off when the sled was washed. Living in CO, when a decal is damaged you can have it replaced but a receipt is proof enough to the officer or the judge. Case dismissed. I called State Parks and asked if a replacement could be issued since I had my receipt. They said no. I went and purchased a new decal for $30. So, I am upset because I FOLLOWED the rules and got fined for it. What mistake did I make?

Not for Out of Staters.

You had no proof!! You had no sticker nor did you have proof of registration on you. The law clearly states that you have to have the sticker clearly visible and proof of registration. As for the courts letting you off if you later show proof, that is at their discretion, they definitely don't have to let you off.

You should not have ridden the snowmobile until you had a new or replaced sticker. I'm not saying I like all the rules/laws and that I don't break them, just saying that when you do and get caught, don't blame the people enforcing them.

Did you know that your also required to have your drivers license on you while operating a snowmobile?

What mistake did I make?/QUOTE]

Okay. This is my .02

1: Your registration (receipt) should be in the sled at all times.

2: Watch where you are aiming at the car wash. You can peel stock stickers with a pressure washer let alone a state registration sticker.

3: If you do peel the sticker off. KEEP IT To show them you had registered it. Show the officer your registration (receipt) and the sticker show them that it will not attach and you will be fine. Your registration ties the sticker to your sled, so you can not put someone else’s stickers on your sled.

I live up by the Utah/Idaho boarder. Were I ride I have to register in Utah & Idaho every year. I paid $32.50 in Idaho and $75.00 in Utah this year. Yes I think it is crazy but I still pay it. The money is not worth the fight. I have let my self be herd by my local representative..

So next week when I travel to west yellowstone I should buy a Idaho sticker and a Montana sticker?

Sorry for the high jack.

Why can you drive a truck/car from state to state and not a snowmobile/atv/utv/boat? (is it $$$$)

You can buy both Idaho AND Montana stickers, cause you will get checked on both sides and fined on both sides. If you plan on riding Jefferson or two top you will need both.

OHV differs because the states control their public lands where as the highway systems is federal. Its a crock of crap and a way to generate revenue and funds at the expense of those trying to recreate on public lands...

So I forgot my receipt in another vehicle. I offered to go with the officer to the parking lot to get it and he refused. He did not need to be a tool and neither did the judge. I have a Utah decal on my dirtbike and my sled. I also have decals for CO and WY. All of which are now placed in my shock tower where they will not be washed off by a direct stream of water when taking care of a very expensive machine.

I had taken the envelope with all cards and receipts out of my pack when drying it out and just overlooked putting them back. It was oversight and I should not have been treated like a common criminal by this officer, judge and his nitwit secretary.

Go ride Guardsman. The guy won't even get out of his truck!! He will role down the window, ask if it is registered (my out of state sticker was on the opposite side), just tell him "yes" and he will say ok and drive away!! LOL

HA HA. Funny you say that. There was a guy there who was cited for animal cruelty. His dog got a cut when it broke it's chain and ran away.

three charges: Animal cruelty, animal neglect and dog at large. That poor fellow ended up paying over a grand in fines.

I don't have to worry now. I have the decal, the second one I have purchased since the New Year.
