So I am "Considering" buying a new Yamaha 2014 Viper

Haven't heard the Phazer rumor, but looking at the Cat/Yammi relationship, it only makes sense that the Viper motor will be the 4-stroke for both, replacing the 1100 twin in Cats lineup. With that said, I have to think we will get a "7000" series and a "9000" series with a turbo.

SR Viper MTX 7000 series
Mountain Max 9000 series (180+ HP)

Joe

Having never ridden the Cat 1100 or a Yamaha, is the Yamaha engine really that much better than the Cat 1100? Enough to make Cat want to stop using it after such a short run?

So I was checking up on my Viper last night.
That same little bird told me to cool my heels and just be patient and wait.
Promising me if I waited I would be richly rewarded with whats coming shortly.

It looks VERY strongly like we are going to get a MTX version of the Viper in the next 90 days...

Didn't want to wait and miss this season. Narrow arms on the way and track and rails soon. Nothing wrong with riding it like it is though, very surprising in the powder for a short track.

Irrelevant.

The 1100 motor Cat is using is made by Suzuki and that partnership is ending (has ended). Yamaha will supply the 4-strokes (at least for the near future) and Cat will make its own 2-strokes based off the new 6000 series motor.

With that said, I have heard the Viper motor is lighter than the 1100 twin, and listening to people that have ridden sleds with the Viper motor it sounds like it is one of the sweetest sleds on snow. I will take their word for it.

yammi motor is 25-30lbs lighter than the 1100 suzuki

I assume that is comparing both motors naturally aspirated?

If that's the case that is going to be HUGE. I never thought I would want a 4-stroke because I love light sleds and the "snap" of a 2-stroke, especially the 800 Cat... BUT, I think my next sled will be one I keep for a long time and I want a motor I can count on (I am currently on a Pro 800...ha).

Honestly I am hoping for a supercharger rather than a turbo on the new Mountain Max.

Had a 280hp supercharger on a Nytro. Made it kinda unusable in the trees as it was "point and shoot". Our Viper yanks both skis off the ground on takeoff at any more than half throttle so I am not sure a super is the way to go and I am a supercharger fan...........

Just my opinion though:face-icon-small-coo

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't a supercharger generally lighter than going the turbo route? That and the fact there is no lag would be the two reasons I would go supercharged and 180ish HP from the factory is all I ask.

Also, I thought a little bit about your Phazer rumor... I suppose it makes sense to compete with Ski-Doo's new 900 ACE. But maybe that will be a 2016 model?

Rumor on another website is that the APEX motor is going to get stuffed in a new chassis... I just can't see that happening but who knows at this point?

apex motor does not fit,its been tried already.super vs turbo weight wise is very close.the one bad thing about the super is it only can be mounted in one place due to being belt driven. where as you can mount a turbo anywhere for better weight distribution.

Yamaha says 1 new engine a year for 5 years. And seeing that aftermarket people are building parts for the Mountain Max already that should mean MM gets the Nytro engine also. That leaves question of what model gets new engine?

Add to that dealers are being advised to get rid of Phazers and.............

Of course just all rumors huh?

I ride both.
Turbo and Supercharger.
Much prefer the Supercharger thus far.
But I seem to be the odd guy out as most folks are in love with Turbos..

You know I am a supercharger fan, had a SC nytro once and have a SC Phazer trying to sell as we bought a new Viper. The Viper take off is much more crisp than the Nytros we had were. Enough so that I think a SC might be too much..at least for a guy only weighs 160.

Am also hearing that putting the turbo that close to the engine that the lag is gone but have no proof of such.

I think that is what yamaha hill climb team was basically trying to do last year - the turbos were mounted right behind the motor. Cable W. basically said that was for throttle response.

Snow checked it.!!

2015 SRViper M-TX 162 LE with MPI Turbo

Look forward to our next project sled.:face-icon-small-hap

Not sure what the other is, but it makes sense that you would keep the supercharded one so that you can continually compare the different types of boost;)
