So how is this downturn in the economy affecting you?

It's sad to hear about people have problems :brokenheart: It can only get better though! It seems to be spread out though, some places seem unaffected and others are dying. Around here it's the same thing, some types of business are dead others are fine. Company lowered prices hoping to stay busy so far it's ok. As long as I got enough work for the summer I will be happy, going back to school, no more of this hot and cold crap!

I know what it's like in a way, sled is up for sale, won't be sledding for the next 2 maybe 3 seasons, but sacrafice will pay off!

I have one friend in a really bad way, $2,000 for a truck payment and insurance and no longer has the huge money rig job, working for like 18/hour living at home barely able to make his truck payment. Owes probably 25k more then his truck is worth, couldn't think of selling it.

Saskatchewan is finally doing well and the world is falling to pieces around it.

It was a slow last 2 months but it usually is for 1 at most. I guess with the downfall people are turning to our cheaper quicker alternative buildings. Sitting at a computer all day is hard when its slow.......

I'm guessing your friend is fairly young and hasn't been through a downturn in the patch. Tough lesson to learn.

Canada eh ?

Going to Canada this season to pave. Our state gov doesn't have the funds, and what jobs they are letting are going way under the engineers estimates. The company's that are " buying " these jobs wont make it very long. Our company tried that program the last time things were tight and it almost bankrupted us. I will be snow checking my 04 Rev for another season  Dino

yep.it can only go up from here:)
construction stopped here.

I'm not a pessimist, but I am a realist. It can and most likely will get worse. It can get much worse.

To many people still feel like they are insulated from this problem. We will see a short term upswing due to all the money being pumped into the system right now. The problem is we have done absolutely nothing to fix the original problems. Once this money makes its way through the system which will be about December, you will see a down turn much bigger than the one we are currently in.

Example - Sub prime mortgages: Secondary market is dead, but instead of forcing the sub prime borrowers to fix their credit or what ever needed fixed to get them credit worthy, we just forced FHA to do all the sub prime loans. In the next 3 to 5 years all the bad loans currently getting made by FHA will go bad just like they did in the secondary market, and what are we going to do them? Were talking trillions of dollars.

Example - What has government changed in its spending habits in the last 3 months to fix the problem? We have increased pork spending and are taxing the rich. Both will lead to disaster.

I could go on and on about what has actually been done to fix any of the problems that originally created this mess. We simply printed a bunch of money and gave it to failing corporations.

IMHO I don't care who you are or what you do, if your not cutting back as far as you can in every aspect of your life you will pay a dear price in the years to come. Those who take the appropriate action and make the appropriate changes in their life right now will have a much greater chance of weathering the storm which will continue to get worse until we get brave enough to let the system collapse and allow new free enterprise to rebuild it.

This is not the first time a civilization has tried to buy its way out of problems created by pride and greed. Many have, all have failed.

The economy hasn't hurt me. If anything the costs of goods and services crashing makes my money go further.

Its killing my family living in MI. Brother and his wife laid off. Dad and Mom been retired for 8yrs and lost thousands in retirment due to market. Oldest brother's job barley holding on.

Crime is on the rise. The people hardest hit are turning to whatever means necessary to take care of their families. I fear for my family in MI.

I live in Colorado Springs, and things here for the most part are the same as they've been. I'm 40 and retired from government employment. I figure I'm good for about 3-4 years, until Obama bankrups our country. Then I'm screwed outa retirement pay. Feel lucky I at least had a taste of retirment.

My house has lost a little value, but not bad considering the rest of the country.

I spend... spend... spend....., in hopes of keeping america working. I only buy american unless its not an option. It costs more, but that's doing my part.

Good luck all.

No joke here a demolition job number 2 bid $300,00 winning bid $40,000. WTF seen ten go that way in the last week or two companies leaving a half million plus on the table on public works projects. Wyoming is getting it hard from the oil patch drying up. A bunch of companies who were in the oil field now trying to do utility work etc. bids are scary out of whack but it will be interesting to see if they can complete them. oh and unemployment..... Cousin placed an add for a truck driver Saturday. by Tuesday night they had 64 applications in their office.

I know a small handfull of people that have been laid off but for the most part Alaska seems to do be doing good. We are still 40/hrs a week with OT coming in the near future. People always need plumbers :D

Oh boy, we had over a 1000 applications ...but only a small handful have any paving experience. Theirs alot of people hurting for work now. Really dont know about the work deal in Canada....time will tell I guess. Dino

Nope, and he hasen't learned his lesson either, he is busy at drywalling now and has a bit of extra money each month....figured he'd finance a new dirtbike  I haven't lived through one, but anyone has to understand you cannot possibly think a boom will last forever and spending money as fast as it comes in is never good.

I'm not to worried, I am selling off my sled etc to pay off my truck to go back to school, having no debt makes it pretty easy to get by. I am hoping by the time i'm done school it's picked back up, but getting something pretty secure and steady (hopefully).

Canada seems to be split, the east isn't to great, but Alberta and Sask are doing pretty well, Sask seems to be unaffected at the moment. There is still jobs around here, just not as many, and means that employers can finally pick good employees.

My company has lots of work right now, got TONS of people asking for jobs because were building a house and well housing market isn't to great. But funny, soon as we start concrete, no one is looking for work, I highly doubt this year will be any different.

Wow, you retired early. If your prediction is correct then we are all screwed. If the US government cannot pay their retirees then all our money will be worthless.

Im trying to do my part im snowchecking a sled and really it hasnt afected me yet. I have worked for my dad on his farm for the last ten years he pays me a salary and this year he got out. I now work for a big farmer 7 miles away. The wife is a RN at a state facility. The only bad thing that hapened to her was they froze her pay scale they were supost to get a 4 dollar raise in feb but that went out the window. It is tight with 3 kids but I didnt have any money in the markets. I still have 3 sleds and a boat and 2 pickups and 2 cars. Like I said its tight but it is getting better.

for me the econemy is not doing bad at all. i am 16 currently, and when the econemy bottomed out in around early march i bought in with 1000$ which is now worth 1,800$ so not bad there. Also, found a job for summer and i am hoping that when november rolls around i can get enough $$ to buy myself a decent sled since the market is down it is a buyers market.

The only thing with this econemy is my parent's budget is a little tight because they were always planning to help all 3 of their kids(including me) through college, and my sisters 1st year of college was this year, and guess where their money was for her college...yup in the market so they had to come up with the money in cash which ment they had to work their asses off until now and hopefully by next july when the next year of her college money is due the market will be back and give my parents some relief.

I hope I'm wrong. I can say I'm glad I never had time to have children.

I did retire early, and could persue another career, but then some other family guy goes without and his family suffers. Thinking I am helping at least one person. Why be greedy, I live well enough. 4 now. That's what I tell my wife anyway....lol She wants me to start a second career. money hungry....typical I think.

30% cut in pay, went from 100,000 equity in my home to 50,000 upside down. I learned what they mean by liquidity of a 401k, thats when you look at your balance and pi$$ your pants. Retirement is for pu$$ies, I am going to work FOREVER.

Just got back to work from a 7 week layoff to find out we're going down again in June for another 8 weeks minimum...no guarentees after that. The forest industry here is just about done for. Wife was layed off last October and hasn't managed to find anything else yet. Daughter is starting her second year of College in September...not sure where the money for that is coming from yet. Son still has a job and is trying to buy a house since they're finally getting almost affordable again....needs help with the down payment and I'll find it somewhere. Was thinking about a new sled for next season, but now I'm not even sure I'll be able to afford to ride the one I have. Sure hope you're right about things only getting better, but right now I'm not real optimistic. :(
