Snowy Range Parking Lot???

Thanks for posting - I'm listed as a stakeholder on page 6. But I am confused as to why that list is so short. Based on the newspaper article posted above the list should be a LOT larger than that?? The Casper Tribune article says "A recent public comment period on the proposal yielded 253 comments." The numbers should be the same right? Comment = Stakeholder? Unless they counted all the Biodiver****y letters together as one stakeholder?

Reading through the plan - there are no budget numbers ($$$) for the snowmobile parking lots.

So I am guessing that the lots are in future phases of work. It looks like they are spending money on toilets, signs, and the visitor centers right now.

This is way unlike what processes they have done before. It almost looks like this was printed prior to public comments. Certainly the timeliness doesn't seem right and they have published no concerns. This is closely related to Wyo DOT and possibly generated in conjunction with them. But with the FS,,,,,,,,,,,,,, who knows??????

Lots of negative talk about the "maverick" snowmobile club last year.

I know there was negative talk about the Club hosting At Mavericks last year, I to was on that was skeptical. As a new member this year I can tell you all Mavericks has done is give us the support and a meeting place. No small or negative thing in my book.

The club provides many opportunity for the community and the riders of this community near and far.

1. It Gives us a Voice to fight the Green Machine that is taking hold in the snowies. Power comes in Organized numbers and right now we don't have that as evident by the overwhelming number against us in the parking lot issue. We need everyones help!

2. Provides a network for fellow sledders, family's and friends. Meet new Riding partners, learn new skills from riding with others...

I hope all that Think the Club is negative, Will show up Once and see for yourselves.

I'm a stakeholder! Sad that no more peaple care than that.

I think there are plenty of people out there who care, but just didn't hear anything about it. If you don't know that something is happening, you can't comment or otherwise become involved. The FS plan has a contact person. Maybe we just need to call and find out the status and see what is happening with this issue.

We can use this forum for updating the status, keeping people informed, and getting people involved, rather than complaining that people aren't joining a club or that they don't care. Let's be productive if we really want the parking lot to happen.

Good Point Albany Mountain!
It was posted on Snowest and there was plenty interest in the post. Problem is it was June and how many read the forum in the summer. The comment period came and went before most people that ride the area even knew about it. I really like the forums, but we can't rely on just the forum for our information. Snowdefense is also right, keeping people informed is the key, but we need to organize in order to do that. We can’t expect people to read a forum about snow in June when beach’s and sun are on their mind.
I can guarantee those opposed to it were on top of it. They had flyers mailed out ( see my post in the other thread), were handing out ready-to-mail post cards against it at large public functions here in Laramie.
We can’t continue to be unorganized and expect to keep our right to ride in the Snowies.

I'll sit this one out awhile,,,

OK, I'VE sit long enough,,,

It is amazing how many posts occur when the first two snow flakes hit the ground,,,,, How deep is it?? Where can I go???? Where can I get lodging and/or machines to rent???? Why is there such a problem with parking??? why can't I find a place to park before 5 am??? can I get there in a day before the place is tracked up? For an example of this,, see the attached jpg on General Discussion copied just prior to sending this email showing the amount of activity on different subjects versus the 28 over about 3 weeks.

This particular topic is pounded by the locals and very little else. The parking problems are created by everyone, locals and out of towners, but I seen about as much activity on this subject about as "how do I get a 800 cc long track performance out of a 1969 artic cat kitty cat?". Or maybe lets start a new thread titled "List your last machine before the mountain got closed to snowmobiling". That should generate a bunch of responses.

I am banking on the Forest Services multipurpose use strategy to make up where snowmobile users lack of "involvement" to carry this thing through. So much where I will buy a six pack for the previous commentors on this post if I am wrong.

I live in the area and love the sport but only ride maybe 2-3 times a year if I am lucky:(. But I've ridden it enough since '67 to know that it is a viable activity and lots of room and area to do it in. But with the recent increase in the last 5-10 years, to make a sizeable impact with parking and masses, the management of the area, being the Forest Service or Wyoming trails, will need tons of support, especially with deals like this, public comment and/or suggestions.

Granted locals have the benefit of public notices and the like, everyone else has a true benefit of Snowest forums that for what I have seen, represents the western area and sport extremely well. For this reason alone, as much as I ride, I visit the forum frequently, summer and winter alike. And I try to make meaningful posts informative to anyone who reads them.

Bless the local club trying to start up. I know how hard it is to do this from other personal ventures and if I was more active (and at home) I would seriously consider joining. But I can't due to time constrants. But I keep extremly active reading Snowest forums and easily found issues like this without looking too hard. But more important! I write my own letters during the times that require them.

I never was interested in joining mass reproductions of mailings in that it put words in my mouth that I was too lazy to say myself (you may have noticed). But I took the time to write my own letters to represent my own views and suggestions in my own words just because I feel they mean more to whoever reads them.

Anyway, just like the 2nd amendment, it requires constant vigilance to maintain the rights and privilages we have and is not just a matter of "its hunting season, lets speak up for our rights". I am a local and I pay as much taxes as the next guy, whether I am from the Great State of Wyoming, or the States of Nebraska, Iowa, or Haiwii. And those who reside in any of the states really have as much say as I do. AND THEY NEED TO STATE THEM IN THE SUMMER, FALL, SPRING as well as winter.

Its not a case of clubs representing you, or mass mailings saying the same thing, it is a case of everyone keeping track of the issues and speaking for theirselves. Then join a club and do the mass thing and its gravy (just like Biodiversity). And by the way,,, if you don't have time for Snowest in the summer and want to know the issues, visit the Biodiversity Associates website http://www.voiceforthewild.org/index.html and find out their approach. Doesn't hurt to know the enemy.

But again, its not a case of whoever represents you or who notifies you; YOU represent yourself as I represent MYSELF. Its not they should sent emails to you to let you know of an issure or I belong to a club and its their job etc. Its your sport and YOU who makes a difference. And don't forget to vote as your sport depends on it (unless you let others do the voting for you as well).

I hope I don't have to buy any six packs because of this and certainly hope I have NOT made any enemies,,, but I made the effort and hopefully it is read, in a 3 page letter for the public comment. And I didn't suggest supporting a 2.2 million dollar visitors center as this interpetive plan suggests.

I still feel that the Public Comment response is still pending from the Forest Service and that the publication shown under http://http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/mbr/projects/rec/ was just a compiled document of what was documented and known prior to the public comment period.

For the future and "no offense". I will continue to post and notify all of any issues that I am aware of, which can be a lot because I have chosen to be active in my own way and actually receive most documented preliminary and final documents because of this (just like Biodiversity).

That alone is a huge value to everyone!

Well said!!!

Hmmmm, I'm not listed as a stakeholder. I sent my comment letter in via e-mail. Wonder what happened?

I emailed mine too. I always cc myself on those emails just to make sure.

We should probably get into the habit of cc'ing the State Snowmobile Association on every comment we send in as well.

Does anyone know of an email address we could use for that?

Then they would have a record of the comments as well. Just an idea.

With other comment periods, such as the Eastern Snowy Range Travel Management plan, the Public Comment 30 day period began November 15, 2006. I sent in my comments on December13 2006. The written response to comments was I see dated June 21 2007 as well as the Final Decision.

If they follow historical trends, we will be seeing the written response to comments in about January.

Also from what I can tell, stakeholders listed are probably the individuals involved at the very early stages and meetings in 2005 in the interpretive plan shown on the FS website. Again I think the interpretive plan is just a compiled document of everything to date PRIOR to the 30 comment period.

I'm thinking that your name (and TMK50 again etc) will show up on a response to comments in upcoming January.

Another Chance to Comment

I checked with the contact person at the Forest Service. There was no decision made on the parking lot yet. There will be another opportunity for us to comment. This is the response:

"The Plan was finalized this fall. The plan does not make any decision as to what will actually happen on the ground, so we are moving forward with analyzing the effects of the different proposals in that management plan. We have several locations proposed for a snowmobile parking lot, and are looking more closely at those. We will have a public scoping period between the draft and final analysis."

Boy I hope so. In the past, alot of the inbetween stuff like between the draft and final analysis can only be commented on by only the ones that commented on the previous comment period. Maybe this is running a different course than some of the other plans. They have a new ranger and maybe he has a different process than the previous two. again lets hope this allows for more input from the snowmobilers.
