Snowy Range Back Country Safety Kits

Thanks, I noticed the error when I made the Topo Map that the coordinates for SK1 were way off.

Something wrong with my GPS I think as it's showing up way to the south.
I'll delete it until I get a more accurate reading.

It's still easy to find since it's right off the corner of "Q" and "T" in that group of pines to the NE. If someone has time, please bring some orange flagging tape and your GPS to mark it.

Thanks Snowest...for the upgrade. Glad to be of service to all my snowmobiling commrades.

Update: Superbowl Sunday.....Took my 10 year old out and he drove the old 1990 Phazer and we had a great time with lots of fresh snow.

We did some serious digging to try and locate my #1 safety kit with no luck. Not sure if it got moved some or if someone stole it. We put in a new kit and a couple 2 gal gas tanks to replace it. If you stop by there, enjoy the huge pit we dug. It's a good spot to take a break out of the wind.

We also dug the door out some at the cabin at SK#2 and closed off the windows with snow at the cabin to keep it from filling in. The snow is now as high as the roof of the cabin.

I put up reflective trail markers on both the cabin and on the tree directly above SK#1. Next time I'm out I'll put some up over the tree on the others kits as well so you know where to dig.

rev u been working hard. i was riding with rev a month ago and he stopped at one of his sites to check on the supplies and he is not kidding when he says he spent a half hour to dig the supplies out.. thats a big applause rev .
and maybe just maybe it will help someone,.
heres one for ya.. what if we put surveyors tape around the areas of interest?? i carry a 200' roll in my sled, just in case i get stranded i can tape off the area so people will see there is someone there.. the rolls cost 2 bucks they come in lime green, orange , and pink .u can get them at lowes or home depot.

There should be orange or pink surveryor tape on the trees around the kit.
I'm also adding reflective trail markers to them as the time permits. If you stop by them and don't see the orange tape and have some then just add it. Perhaps the tape I put up is buried. It has snowed a ton this year and even though I reached up 7 to 8 ft when I tied them on it is possible that they are buried now.

Safety kits 1 and 2 are removed for the season (April 9th). These are the ones that are off the corner of Trail T/Q and the one inside the cabin.

The snow had nearly buried the cabin and I had to dig down and go through the back window to get inside.

I'm hoping to get the others out this coming weekend before I head back to China for work. If not I'll get them out the middle of May when I return.

Chuck, we were out on the 6th of April, and dug up kit #4 at the end of the roller coaster, so it should not be so deep of a dig for ya, as it was about 4 feet deep then. Thanks again for all the Kits, and more importantly, for thinking of your fellow sledder. Too bad we did not get to hook up while we were out this season, but I know you have been busy with work and all. Take Care, Kevin

Thinking about the upcoming season! I sent a few bucks for the cause. I hope all who ride in the snowies help the Rev out. Thanks to him and all that support his effort.

Here is a Garmin GPS map of the main trails of the Snowies along with marked locations of the Safey Kits. Hats off to Chuck and everyone else that made it possible! :yo:[/QUOTE

Can someone send me a updated copy of the trail system and also updated safety kit locations. Would like to load on my Garmin 60CSX. You can PM me. Again, thanks to all who have helped with this and a special hats off to rev*baron. Was on the Vol. fire dept for 10+ years.

I was with your group in Feb 2011 when you were trying to find the one by Rob Roy.

Here are some ideas:

-in addition to marker tape, tie a long string to the kit and loop the string up/over a high branch and back down to kit and tie it off. That way someone will know they are digging in the right spot.

or

- take a black marker and write on the tape how many feet below the tape one will find the kit. Just write 5' or 7', whatever. The info about the feet (not the exact feet for each kit but the knowledge that it will be written on the tape) could be included with the general info on the location of the kits on this board.

Can someone send this to me so I can load it on my Garmin 60CSX?

Currently I'm in China for work and heading home today finally. Hope to get out right after Christmas and put out the kits and fuel again this year.

Looks like with the low snow this year that not too many riders out yet so hopefully no one needs anything till later.

I'm going to put them out in the exact locations as last year, so all your GPS waypoints will still be good.

I like the rope idea. I will do that this year to make it easier to locate them. I'll tie the rope to the kit, and add orange tape to the rope every few feet as it goes up and over a higher branch. I've been using reflective trail markers too on the tree they are next to help find them in the dark.

Have safe and wonderful Christmas.

Thanks Chuck, Have a great holiday season, and all the best to the Family.

Finally got out on Sat. Jan 21st and put out the two most southern kits. Same locations as last year. I did put a rope on the kit by the tree and tied it to a upper branch and the tote to make it easier to find. The other kit is in the old cabin again in the back corner. Climb in the back window to get to it, as the front window and door are blocked off.

Will be putting out the other 3 this coming Wed. and Thur Jan. 26-27.

Thanks to Jeff (monster967) for coming along and helping me out.

All the kits (5) are now in place. Same places as last year. Put up reflective trail signs by them so they are easier to find.

As some members have sent me donations, I've added those items to the kits as well. I also upgraded 4 of the totes to the nice rubbermaid heavy duty style. One to go.

The one off the corner of Hwy 130 has a roll up tow sled in it. Some have shovels now and the one in the log cabin has a snowbunjie rattler in it that I found on the trail.

There is at least 4 gals of premium fuel next to each kit as well. Some in the small 2 gal cans (so two of them) or some have just one 4-5 gal can next to the tree/kit.
