Snowmobile vs Dirt Bike, What's more fun/enjoyable?

For me riding dirt bikes is more enjoyable because of the people I ride with and others in the sport. They don't give a rat's *** whether you are riding alone or with an avalanche beacon or weather your backpack is with you or on your sled/bike. People on this site for instance are way too uptight on how/where/how you dress/where you store it riding. It is none of any ones business on all that. It is my life. Dirt bikers are less likely to push their views on someone else. Sorry I don't invest in the thousands of dollars worth of gear to sit in my garage 9 months per year. It is probably worth it for some of you but not me. Just my opinions.

You realize that 2/3 of your gear you carry is not for YOU right?

YOU not carrying a shovel for example doesn't at all affect your safety, it affects your buddy's safety. The reason people "are way too uptight" is because THEIR lives are in the hands of other people they ride with, and even those of other crews around the area.

If this issue is that big for you, perhaps the comments by others should be a sign you're not taking other people's safety into consideration. If you're riding alone though, UNLESS you're around other people, I don't see why what you carry matters to anyone else... it's rare though that people are in an area all on their own though, so the idea that you're 100% alone is probably unlikely.

As to riding alone... not putting anyone else at risk, most of us have done it, I don't see a big reason for others to give you SH** about that! I ride bikes alone all the time, if I fall & break my leg or bust my melon, it's my own dumazz fault, it is what it is, no reason for other people to have anything to say about that

For me they are in the following order: (and I'll toss the rocket into the mix because you're thinking of selling it)

1. Sledding: As many have mentioned you are not confined to a trail and the learning curve on a sled seems to be longer. 13 Summit 163

2. Dirt bikes: Tons of fun too and they are bulletproof. 08 and 05 WR 450

3. Sport bike: Still fun but very confined. Track days are fun. 02 R1

Just get one, two or three of each, then you can hone in one what you like best and you will never have to ask yourself that question again :face-icon-small-hap

I've had 6 sleds this winter, now got it down the three most enjoyable ones (and for different snow conditions) :face-icon-small-coo

Last summer I rode bikes about an hour a day from home, and then whatever I could on weekends, LOVE dirtbikes. That said, even though I can ride right from my house, spend way less, have less hassles, & go some amazing places, I'll take sleds any day.

I don't go sledding to ride trails, I go sledding for the "unlimitedness" (yeah... that's a word yo!) of it, because the only limit is your ability & what your eyes & brain will show you as possible.

I imagine that riding in true desert on bikes is likely similar, but I've never been, so not sure.

I'm looking forward to mid April, when I can ride bikes during the week around here, and then go up the road & ride sleds on the weekends!!

Dune riding is the closest for me, to riding untracked pow. Get some wind and/or rain to clean up the dunes it's pretty sweet.

For OP, get a bike you can plate and get after it.

And as far as going anywhere, bikes can do plenty in the summer. Just might not have Ranger Rick happy with you.

HAHA... last summer I got myself into a drainage near my place that had pretty bad flood damage on the way down & I couldn't quite make it out on the road. I ended up "sidehilling" through the woods to get back to the top, I kept looking around like the Forest circus was going to be there when I came out!!! It was pretty darn fun though!

I've ridden dirt bikes and sleds on and off for the past 35 years. I was sold on dirt bikes as my primary hobby while I was stationed in the southeast, but once I moved back into the mountains and started sledding again dirt bikes took a back seat. Then, my buddy chose to buy a RZR and give me a ride....well, I sold all my dirt bikes and bought a RZR....now I own that same RZR XP4 900 and a new RZR XP1000 2 seater. I can take the family with me and yet I still get the same exhilaration I used to get on my bikes. I would rate my RZR's as equal to my sleds just because of the family time. Sleds are a commitment and difficult to convince my wife and daughters that fun can be had in 10 degree below zero weather. :)

This is really a tough question... I have been on dirt bikes almost all my life and have owned a street bike since I was 15. Started sleds about 25 years ago and took a break a couple of times when the pocket book wouldn't allow and the kids were young and time was a factor. Now that I have the funds and the time in the winter I get the most thrills from the sled on a powder day, but if I could only have one toy it would be my adventure bike(BMW 1200gs.
