Ok im stupid, I have never seen one used or even seen one before, hurd of them tho. so what do you do hook it to the ski and step back a bit and give her a good pull? Instead of just grabbing the ski loop with your hand and pulling on it. My kids are getting to the age that 2 out of the three have sleds now and are learning the hard way and getting stuck I need something that would help instead of tearing my back out every time by pulling on the ski loop by hand and almost getting run over by them hahhaah.
Hook to a ski loop, and lean back (or step back and lean). I can use ours to get the hubby unstuck.......it's kind of like having 2 or 3 people pulling with using this. 
Makes quick work of getting unstuck......once the sled pops up, I just dodge out of the way (or whomever is using it, all we ride with use it), and a quick flip of the wrist and the loop of the snowbunje is off of the ski loop. Definitely a good thing to have along while riding.
