SLP? MBRP? SuperQ?

Just got some MBRP cans in at work the other day. Put one on a PRO RMK. Fit and finish is amazing. Sound it not bad. seems a little quieter then previous years. Seams like it weighs a little less then the stock can but not much.

I put an MBRP on mine and and felt it was quiet compared to last years model. 4.5 pounds lighter than stock.

The MPRP... loudest of the above mentioned.

I think your wrong on this one.

Hmm, I must really be an odd duck, I used to have an 05 kawi 250f dirt bike. It was the loudest production 4 stroke ever made(to my knowledge this still stands) coming in at a whopping 104db which is really load considering it was only a 250f. I thought it was so great and the noise made it sound really powerful. After I became a better rider and later down the road I bought a new 07 ktm 250sxf. This bike was at the time the quietest 250f on the market that had a motocross engine in it. I would start that thing and compared to the kawi it was so quiet(didn't really like it sounded like it had no balls at all even though it pulled way harder and longer everywhere is sure didn't sound like it) after riding it for a few months I saw the kawi sitting there and decided to take it for a spin. That thing was so loud and annoying it ended up being a fairly short ride. It just didn't sound good at all and really took away from the ridding I thought. I guess I learned that I would rather listen to the track and my surroundings rather than some load exhaust behind me.

Then a few years later I kid from school bought a piped cat of some form and he started it up and ran around the school parking lot. At that point the kawi would have made my ears feel like they were in heaven. That sled sounded like a big pile of crap. It MAY have made more power but I couldn't stand ridding something that sounded like is was about to fling apart and like my head was in the cylinders.

With all this being said its not so much the noise(db) that annoys me is how it sounds. My kawi was erratic and load, my ktm was VERY SMOOTH and quite, well as quite as a 250f is anyways.

So I have a question. Do any companies make a light exhaust system that sounds good and is not really load. One that is smooth and not erratic and annoying.

Also do the sled manufacturers still make the silencers and cans from steel. I dont understand why they use heavy azz steel when dirt bikes all use ti pipes and aluminum cans. Yet they spare no expense everywhere else. Like they had a deal with the can manufactures or something.

Loud pipes lead to land closures.

Think your a badass and don't care what the enviro Nazis think?

How much of a badass are you going to be when you can only listen to your sled in the garage because all the riding areas are turned into Wilderness?

I love riding snowmobiles and can't stand loud pipes, how bad do you think the cross country skier or snow shoer hates loud pipes?.... And they vote.

agreed but I think that mostly the really bad one are the erratic bb's in the can noise that gets people pissed. You dont mind a rock concert but when the guys playing sound like **** then I bet you would. Also as I said I like to be a little closer to nature(not hugging trees but enjoying the outdoors) I guess than a loud aZZ machine under me.

I think I was spelling loud wrong, opppss!

Better think again . . .

Anyone who thinks a loud pipe/can is cool.....better think again! This is one of the main reasons we have such an up-hill battle in our fight to keep riding areas open. You people with loud sleds are making matters WORSE!!

Loud.. very seldom equals more power.

Just a "Word To The Wise" :)

Cheers!

HPS all the way, they are not that load but just enough to sound good, they do alot of testing before they make them, HPS wouldn't make a pipe that was robbing hp or losing hp. I have two of them on order, And for that person that wanted their phone number her it is. HPS 208-357-3343

Of the ones mentioned... My preference is for the SLP and SPG cans.... with the SPG getting the nod for slightly lower weight in the past (the new 2011 SLP cans are yet to be put on the scale)

They are very high quality... have a bit more rumble than stock. Both are flow matched to the Stock polaris silencer using a flow-bench, which is VERY important these days with the sensitive CFI systems.

I really like the quality of the HPS cans... but they are pretty darn loud in comparison to the SLP and SPG which do pass the Colorado sound check.

The MPRP... loudest of the above mentioned.

Jimmy, the owner of BMP, took time to show me his silencers...The BMP silencers also seem to be very high quality and light as well.

Most of the cans that have any real silencing properties to them are in the 7-9 lb range which would net 2.5 - 4.5 lb weight reduction.

With the stock can so light at approx 11.5 lbs... there is not as much weight to be lost in a muffler as there used to be.

Anyone that says that their silencer ADDS power... I'd be very very critical of... Back in the day there was a potential for some cans to add power to Some sleds... but in this day and age of very well tuned, computer controlled, EPA regulated sleds... It really is just not that simple and many of the "free flowing" silencers actually can cause HP to drop or cause some serious runnability issues.

These sleds are not running "restricted" exhausts that will benefit from simply "opening up" the exhaust.

If I were to buy a can these days... I'd ask for flow-bench results from the stock silencer and what the vendor is offering (from the same flow bench) to make sure they were very close to the same. If they cant give that info... I'd pass on that brand.

If they say that they increased the flow for use with the stock pipe/fuel-map I'd ask why and how. If they altered the map using a piggyback controller like the PC-3/5, BD box, or Dobeck box... find out how much on the snow testing has been done.

So with your knowledge of BMP and this quote from the BMP website would you be confident in buying their product?.......

If you want a light muffler that barks, our Powderlite Muffler is the way to go! They only weigh 4 lbs and they fit great with lazer cut mounting brackets. Our Powder Lite mufflers are dyno tested on our Superflow to make sure that they don't lose power like many other companies do. Our free flowing baffle design will give you excellent throttle response. If you want light, get a BMP Powder Lite!!

I'm concerned about that last part though....Free flowing would translate to extreme loss of backpressure, wouldn't it? What I'm looking to do is (as stated in my own post) stick a head on, and I thought maybe just a can as well.

I would like to see one of the aftermarket companies make a lighter can (without reducing HP) and still be as quiet or close to stock.....I bet they cant do it:face-icon-small-sho. I have designed exhaust systems for the last 6 years in the automotive industry so Im pretty familiar with flow testing and CFD analysis on exhaust bends and restrictions. Im not familiar with snowmobile exhaust design but its a similar concept. When it comes to the aftermarket world for automotive 99 out of a 100 times you will get an exhaust system that is much less quality then the OE system.

Diamond s can

I've got the titanium can and it's a 7 #loss so I doubt the hrs is that light my can has a bark but it's not to bad I love the can good luck the stock can weighs 10 1/2 #s

I have no experience with the others I have a mbrp trail can and I like it, didn,t seem to lose any power.
