Yup, you definitely want to change those boots if they are cracked to make sure you don't get an air leak and burn your engine down. It's a good idea to wrap them with reflective heat tape to protect them from the heat off the Y-pipe.

You will need to change the intake boots for sure. Another option to help with intake boot life that has worked for me, is to coat the outside of the intake boots with high temp RTV sealant. On my sled it has worked great.

Thanks for all the ideas.

Gonna wrap the oil hoses in heat tape as well. Where is the best place to get the heat tape. My local auto store sells heat tape. Is it the same stuff?

Thanks

It works well. You can buy ultra good stuff and use it everywhere, wrap Y pipe with header wrap if it is not coated..anything is better than nothing.(usually...somepeople ya never know)

Finally got it all back together...for the second time and the leak seems to have stopped. I will wait another week to declare victory as the leak was always slow.

The first time I put it back together it was still leaking. It was leaking from the bottom bolt that holds on the oil pump. I bought a 1/4" longer bolt (the orginal bolt did not seem to want to tighten) and applied gasket seal to the bolt and the pump.

I also changed the oil hose that goes from the center of the tank, runs between the cylinders, and ends right above the oil pump. That hose is a 5/16" if anyone needs that information.

Thanks for all the help

Ok started leaking again. But this time I can see oil puddling around the brass fitting that goes in the crank from the line off the oil tank. It is the one thing I did not replace or remove. Looked at it today but can not figure out how to get it off or where it connects. Does it go into the crank at a right angle or does it go stright down? Does it screw in or does it just "pop" out?

Thanks

It may rattle out by itself....press fit to case... as dmj1 and others have done epoxy it or thread a fitting in there!

Final got it done. The brass piece was not the issue. The issue was the insulation around the hose that goes from the middle of the oil tank to the engine. Every time I would take the hose off the brass piece and turned the hose upside down, oil would leak into the insulation. That insulation has a foil cover but some kind of "cotton" like fabric as well. The oil would be absorbed by the cotton fabric and once I put the hose back, the oil would "drain" from the fabric making it look like it was leaking around the brass piece.

Thanks for all the help
