Sledding and Skiing

My wife is getting tired of being left home all the time while I go riding (crazy?). I took her riding last year and she enjoyed it, however, she enjoys skiing a lot more. We would like to bring out 4 couples, the hens go skiing while the guys go riding. Is there any place that has both within a reasonable distance? My wife is a dang good skier, so a quality ski hill would be nice.

My first thought is Steamboat, but I'm sure there are others. Is Steamboat Springs sled friendly? Is there parking issues at some of the resorts? I know the town is more geared towards skiers, so a 27' snowmobile trailer might be kind of hard to wedge into a Subaru's parking spot.

Wyoming/Colorado is probably as far as we'd like to go as we would be from northeast Nebraska. Any help would be appreciated.

Steamboat Springs - about 20 mins from the resort up to rabbit ears, or about an hour up to steamboat lake.

Vail - you can almost ski and sled from the same parking lot, but it's maybe a half mile from the lifts....or you can go across the street, about 2 miles away

Winter Park - it's maybe 5-10 minutes from the resort to the parking lot for corona.

Breckenridge - I'm not sure if you can jump on the guide-side or not. We usually go to the back side by salida.

Snowies - Green Rock parking lot is about 15 miles past the ski resort. I don' think this is a super nice resort, but I've never been there.

There is no snowmobiling within a half mile of any of the Vail lifts. The best place to go in the Vail area is probably Vail Pass. They have room for big trailers as long as you get there early. It's a hybrid area ( :face-icon-small-sad ) so there are a ton of x-country skiers and those that ride sleds and ski.

No offense but I'd stay away from Vail Pass, its extremely overcrowded, hard to park unless you're there at dawn, and the FS charges you per person to ride the national forrest which I think is complete BS. You're on the right track with Steamboat. Its a good size town with some real people there instead of all ski bums and yuppies. You've got Buff pass, steamboat lake, the flat tops, and rabbit ears all within a short distance to sled. They have large parking lots with shuttles at most the resorts so if you have park your rig off property its easy to shuttle back and forth.Plenty of skiing and shopping for the women to do. Its about as sled friendly as I've seen for a ski town IMO.

No... but 3.5 via road by my calculations... he's not THAT far off. And way closer than VP.

insert map of place not to go here.

oh... but if you're pulling one of those stupid things that goes BEHIND a truck... good luck up there turning around.:face-icon-small-win If you've got a sled deck or single sled, go for it!

well... this was a "directions" map, not sure what happened. Either way, it's not very far, and trailers suck.

^^^I have a little experience with that location. Turning trailers around isn't too bad. I corrected him because I thought he was referring to riding on the opposite side of I-70 (on Vail mtn). I try to keep the out of towners going to VP instead of my back yard!

I've only ridden there a few times & I've seen some disasters up there...

One person parks at the end of the road & it's a HUGE mess.

It's a place I would generally never tell people to go, as all it takes is about 10 vehicles to fill up the road... but it is the closest place to vail.
