Sleddeck on half ton

I will be doing a deck on my 2007 half ton dodge this winter. I temporarily had it in before with 1 sled and it was fine. I have used the deck in my dads 3/4 duramax the last three years without issue but do not have the use of the truck this year so I will be adding air bags to my truck. By my math with what my truck weighs i will be about 300-400 lbs over GVWR but still within the GAWR on both ends. Driving habits will play an important role as mentioned before with so much weight up high...just dont drive like your in a race and it should be fine.

Sounds about right.

I have my deck loaded with my two sleds just today and plan to run up to the scales tonight after my sons foot ball practice just to see were the weights are for my piece of mind.

Subject has been beat to death enough. Personally if I had a half ton and wanted/needed to get to spots that you couldn't get a trailer into I'd put a deck on it without thinking twice, especially the newer 1/2 tons with heavier axles, better brakes, etc. Heck, most of the new 1/2 tons would whip up on or keep up with a 20 year old 3/4 ton in every category except payload capacity.
If you want a hassle free alternative to airbags, get Timbrens load levelers. They're good overloads, easy to install and cheaper than airbags.

Attached a couple pics of last weekends return from Intermountain with my ecoboost decked with 2 M8's. Averaged around 14 mpg on the trip home via Grand Junction and Vail Pass. VERY pleased with how it handled(I did drive like i had to pay for my stuff). Even had some good crosswinds headed north out of Denver (shocking) and no problems.

Do you have air bags on it? Also are those stock Load "C" tires? Looks Good!!!

any good ramp pictures?

I am in the process of building a new sled deck for my 2000 F350 crew shortbox, does anyone on here have a good picture of their sliding/extending ramps i built the deck to sit as low and close to the bed rails as i could to eliminate extra hiegt and lower overall CG bet i am not sure of what i will do about an extending ramp i believe the available space is around 6.5 feet inside the tailgate and that would not be anywhere close to long enough of a ramp to get up on the deck.
if anyone has a good picture they could post and info what works good and not so good it would be great to see .
thanks!

I'm looking forward to seeing the pics!

Well sorry to say i sold the halfton this past weekend and got a new duramax the deck looks slick on it, but good luck with you and yours! i wana know how it goes considering i never hauled the sleds on the 1/2!
LET THE SNOW FLY!!

I ordered a toyup deck for my Sierra and I absolutely love it. My truck handles the load great. I have airbags. When I first loaded both assaults I had forgotten to Air up the bags and my truck hardly sagged. I put air in and my truck did great. I get Better gas mileage then I did pulling my two place and my sleds stay clean. I would buy another toy up deck if I had to do it all Over again. I'm glad I bought a deck even if it is a half ton but my truck does a great job maybe my truck is just better then those who thought it was a bad idea or didn't like it on their half ton;) after having a deck I dOnt thInk I can go without one now. I'll post pics later. But I love my set uP!

Do you have an idea what your combo weighs (deck and 2 sleds)? I am looking at getting an EB F150 as well.

I'm going to take some better pictures this weekend these are just with my cell phone.

I don't own the deck, but I helped load it and best guess is less than 500 lbs. Both sleds were M8 162 w little to no fuel in them. 1,600 -1,700 lbs??

do any of you guys that run half tons and sled decks check with your ins agent first on if you're covered during an accident?

this was brought up in a thread on hcs and I looked into before I got one for my half ton dodge.

My agent, state farm btw, said if you are over your gvwr and are in an accident you are not covered. period. end of story.

think about it guys.

Correct the insurer has the choice to decline any claim if the vehicle responsible was either over GVWR or anything of the sort.

Edit: They also have to be able to prove that the accident was caused because of it.

My '11 Dodge half ton work truck has a Payload capacity of 1950lbs. Even with a couple Apexs on that sled deck it still is under payload capacity. Not sure what everyone's deal is with hauling these things with half tons...... Wish I had a deck for mine instead of pulling the enclosed everywhere with the one ton...

first off... not trying to flame you here but I wanted to throw up some numbers. the only way according to the dodge website to get that capacity in a half ton is with a 4x2 regular cab long box. now the truck that most would drive is a 4x4 quad cab short box. the payload on that is 1380.

so 2 sleds ready to ride 1200lbs... toyup claims to have the lightest deck at 400lbs. 2 guys 400lbs. some gear and misc stuff in your truck. 200lbs

about 2200lbs which is creeping in on a 1000lbs over capacity. just sayin guys.

Close. 4x4 Tradesman. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Ram#Payload_capacities Most these decks run around that 400lbs. Depending on the sled, I say 550 max x 2 = 1100 lbs + 400 = 1500lb payload. And if your splitting hairs over a few hundred pounds you best not see what people that use pickups to haul and work with do with there trucks.....

I don't think any of us would be too concerned about overloading our trucks by a couple hundred pounds of properly placed load.

However, move that load approx 3' higher & rearward of where the truck was designed to carry it..........not a good idea.

Sure driving straight everything will be fine, but that improperly placed load will screw you hard when things get hairy.
