Didn't listen to the audio, any discussion of the tailgate? Seems like you run the risk of breaking it. You could unhook it if it is on cables and load straight into the bed if it's an issue.

If your cables are good, no problem breaking a tailgate. I have replaced both of the cables on the current tailgate because they did rust out. You could remove the tailgate like you said, but that would put the 2 pieces of wood (ramp to top board) closer together and at a different angle. Would probably still work...I just have not tried it that way.
