Sled extraction from Mt Baker

The surgery to repair both ankles lasted 13+ hours. It's been over a week since the surgery and I am improving. I am off the pain meds. The healing is going good and the pain is mangable. The feeling of being off the pain pills is nice. The road to recovery will be long but doable. I am already looking forward to riding again when I learn to walk again.....or before :face-icon-small-dis

Thank you to everyone that has helped me out along the way.

My fiancé (a lifetime snowmobile rider) is taking really good care of me and my needs. :face-icon-small-hap

The sled is currently located at Pierre's Polaris. It appears to be totaled. It is currently tied up in an insurance claim with Allstate. The sled has 830 miles on it and has never given me and issue. Pierre's has been super helpful with dealing with this accident.

ROKRIG hats off to you for stepping up...

Brent you know the entire sled community wishes you a speedy recovery. Good attitude helps and sounds like you got plenty of it.

I have been there, more less broke or shattered every bone on my right ankle to my toes. Think you beat my surgery time by a few hours....dam

Anyways I recovered pretty quick, have full lift of my ankle and after recovery the injuries never bothers me to the point where it hinders me from playing.

Just helpin a buddy out. Herb, Paul, Fritz and Jason (Alpine Ascents) deserve kudos. Everyone was necessary to make this work as quickly and seamlessly as it did.

Nevertheless, thank you christian

Could you fill in some details, if you don't mind. How did you get from the creek to the trail, to the parking lot, hospital etc? Did you or the medics choose Harborview? Best hospital in the region and we are lucky to have it. I had a less serious leg, knee, ankle injury and the toughest thing was the muscle atrophy and I was only immobilized for two weeks and off the leg for 6-8 weeks I think. That quad was significantly smaller than the other leg and only evened out an injury to the other knee. Good luck and work hard on your recovery, do everything the PTs say and it will go faster/better.

When I got to him, he was partially in the creek. The ankles/feet were causing him severe pain whenever he moved. I told him he would have to crawl along the rocky shore, over the small snow bridge (just beyond the ramp in the picture) and then to my snowmobile on his arms/elbows and knees. This was the easiest and least painful way. Once to my sled, he pulled himself onto it and rode it out of the ravine to the main trail. I gathered up a few of our things and then climbed out of the ravine up to my sled where Brent was sitting waiting for me. I grabbed the controls and stood behind him while we slowly (and agonizingly for him I'm sure) made our way back to the trucks. Along the way, we met up w/ some folks that were coming off the mountain. We asked if one of them could drive Brent in Brent's truck to the nearest hospital. That happened and I went back to retrieve the big ticket items (pack, helmet, spare parts/belts from the sled) and returned to my truck, loaded up and headed to the hospital as well. Doctors determined that significant work would be needed so Brent was driven to Harborview.

What Rokrig said.
I can not say enough good things about how I have been treated by Harborview. Everybody from the janitor to the surgeon have been overly helpful and nice to me.
I am looking forward to PT! Because that means I can put some weight on them. However I am 6-8 weeks away from that. PT is going to play a big part in my recovery.

This is my new PT coach! :) just copy and paste.

Hey Christhesled guy. Thanks for the wishes. I still have that bumper for you. :)

I want to ride next year just not sure if I will be cleared.

Here is a after surgery x-ray of my left foot. Right foot has just 6 screws and pins in it. The tendon was also torn and had to be reroute to another tendon.

PT

I hope you have a big back yard with privacy fence so nobody can see you doing that awesome PT.

Sorry I couldn't show up the other night.... Work is a nightmare right now.

I recognize that hardware! My wife just had hers removed last month. I am going to make a wind chime out of it and hang it by the door to the cabin to remind her to use her shoe chains. Best of luck on your recovery.

So you're tellin' me all I gotta do to fix broken bones is go get some deck screws and punched steel strapping? :face-icon-small-ton

Parted out couldn't you make that back and more? You would also have a cool mantle piece (twisted tunnel) :face-icon-small-ton

If I had the time and my life wasn't soo crazy right now I would have bought it and built it.

Back in Seattle. Casts off. Removable boots installed. PT is starting next week. Ankles are almost completely locked up.. If you listen next week you will be able to hear me yelling in pain. Weight bearing date is Aug 29!

Listen to your therapist. Eat the pain and work those ankles hard. I had a tib/fib break just above the ankle in 08 and I half-assed my PT. I can walk normally and ride but I can't really run any more because my ankle is still not right.

Just saying.

Best of luck. It's a long road.
