Sled decks with a winch & boom

i have made three with steel uppers decks and two with alum. decks but i have always made the booms from steel pipe as it is easy and a lot cheaper. all have been two pieces bottom frame with removable deck as i have a stainless steel deck that is smaller for atvs in the summer.
Kennyblatz would like to see pic's once your done.

There was a guy in Puyallup that had one of these in the swap meet parking lot. It was on a Blue Dodge...Clean set up, look like a cover but the sides slid in and out where the skis were. When not in use it looks just like a hard cover..bad a$$

OK so if i am understanding this right.

You mount the boom on the driver side. You load the passenger side first than the driver side. Load all sleds from the driver side.

So mount the boom on the passenger side than load from the passenger side.

Pretty simple

Yamtodd - How do you make the pivoting point of the boom? The part where you mount the winch. And could you make that part for me? how much?

Some better pics would be great.

sledskiing, i will post some better pics. Shipping it from spokane, wa to you i do not think it would be worth the money. you should be able to take the pics to a local fab guy and they should be able to weld one up quick. The top piviot point is some 4" square tube with a u shaped notch out of it sliped over and shimmed and welded to the top of the 2.5 sch 40 pipe. The winch is mounted on a piece of 6" channel that is notched to fit on top of 2.5 sch 40 pipe.

Thats what I was thinking!! Why have the whole deck 8' wide when all you need is a little spot for the outside skis to sit? (Hamster starting to run again....)

I dunno.. If you could post up some up close pics or email me some to chris@sledmods.com that would help. thanks

How wide would the sleds be if you put 2 sleds side be side with one of them backwards? I used to use a flatbed. but hated the thing being so wide. 2 sleds side by side and nose to toes would not require 8+ft wide.

yeah for sure yammtodd we just picked up the rest of our steel today were just missing a 2.5 sch 40 pipe i can't find one yet.
we already have great improvments in mind for deck 2 so well see how it goes. i just wish i had more time to work on it.

Most mtn. sleds now are about 11' long. unless you be putting the backwards one's track up over the cab you'll need a mighty long deck.

Thanks to Yamtodd and others for ideas and help.

Here's the one kennyblatz welded up, I mostly drank beer and made jokes.

winch completely unseen,
angled rear corners so I might be able to avoid banging my face into them,
Massive clearance under deck.

The last pic is a normal deck to compare clearance with ours.

Sorry guys, but those are gay. If you can't load onto a sleddeck via a ramp then how in the hell do you ride in the mountains? Not to mention that they look just ****in stupid. On a deck with superclamps, I am literally loaded and ready to go in 30 seconds, what's the point ?

Come on now, don't let me down I am ready for my lashing.
Ill

another design

or you can build one like this!!!
this is my prototype. small detachable ramp. not a steep angle. only have to move one sled at a time. then if your sled dies i am adding a detachable hand crank just in case.

The reason we built ours this way was to be a little different. I've had a ramp come apart on me and cause damage to sled and truck, and a friend just had surgery to repair a destroyed ankle from a ramp loading mishap.

I can't argue with you on the looks, I happen to think convertibles look stupid but that's just me.

Time wise, you're faster loading up than I will be, but I usually drink my beers pretty fast so it's good to give the other guys a little head start.

I'll work on getting a video clip up soon.

does it unload and warm up my sled for me??? would be sweet for those cold days when you don't want your hands froze to the ramp...

I load my sled at home with an overhead crane. I just toss a strap to the bars and it balances nicely. quick and quiet. I have a ramp on my deck, but am strongly considering a boom on my next rig.

1- It would be awsome to have that set up for a disabled sled.
2- We have ALL heard of ramp loading mis-haps & the outcome usually sucks.
3- Someone will see that & put some sort of twist of their own on it to suit their needs & it may enable them to ride a few extra years (we will all be there some day).

Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't see why you couldn't do away with the boom altogether and just have a solid mounted winch and then a pulley at the rear edge of the deck for the cable to roll on? Any reason why not? I think that would look a little slicker....good ideas in here tho!
