Sled deck on 09 F150

If your concern is that your truck will be to heavy then you have nothing to worry obout. My dads 07 F150 is rated for it, just about over GVW but w/e. He just put a set of airbags on it to keep it from sackin out to bad. as far as the short box goes, if your ok with leaving your gate down with the deck on then you will be fine, people do it all the time. KNow a guy with a 08 tundra with a short bed and thats what he does :beer;

Here's my concern:

I have an open two-place trailer (8' wide by 10' long) that I would like to modify into a sled deck. If the box is only 5.5' long then I will have 4.5' hanging past the end of the box. Is this too much overhang? I'm not concerned about the truck handling the weight whatsoever, just the overhang.

If anybody has any pics of something like this, that would be great.

Thanks,

Mike

OH! yah that is kind of iffy haha well I my self have never seen that much over hang. If you are going to be cuting up the 2 place anyways, why not just hack it down to like 8 feet or so? That woud be mannagable for sure and not very hard at all to do. Somthing to think abot anyways:beer;

Nah. If the sled over hangs by 2-3 feet its fine. Wont hert anything. My sled sticks out more then that out the back of my ranger haha and its still there when I get to the hill!:beer;

i have an 07 f150 shortbox. can i get away with a sleddeck and 1 sled and not worry about too much sag or would i need airbags regardless?

I had this dilema as well..and I just HATED the overhang !!! So I bought an '09 F150 but got the 6.5 box cause I run a deck..I also ALWAYS have airbags...makes the ride so much better and NO SAG...

So you had a deck on a 5.5' box? What's the dimensions of your deck?

why does everybody like the sleddecks can you guys pull a 2 or 4 place traller??? i just never realy understood that

with the deck and a trailer you can have a four place and still turn around in the space of a two place.
some places you can't take trailers over some of the passes so the deck is a must.

I travel myself a lot to meet up with people or work or or or and I really don't want to pull a trailer if I'm only taking one sled..if I take two, the deck stays and trailer goes.
I'll have to get the dimensions on the old deck for ya...it was a custom build...now I have the 6.5 ft box and I got a removeable extension piece...love it ..not a sloped "beaver tail" like some call them...straight out piece. I'll see if I have any pics..:D

I have an 04 GMC 1500 with a 5ft 8in bed and I have a full lotus sled deck. I have airbags and it works perfect, look at full lotus's website, the decks are amazing

Payload ratings from Ford:
http://www.fordvehicles.com/trucks/f150/2009/specifications/payload/

tire ratings:
stock tires are good for a 1600lb payload.

HD Payload package: (allows 2300lb payload)
"LT245/75Rx17E BSW all-terrain tires; high-capacity 17" 7-lug steel wheels; heavy-duty shock absorbers and frame; a 72-amp battery; upgraded springs, a radiator and auxiliary transmission oil cooler; a 9.75" gear set; and a 3.73 axle. (requires 5.4L 3V V8 gas engine and the Max Trailer Tow Package. Available for RegularCab Styleside with 8' box (145" wheelbase) or SuperCab with 8' box (163" wheelbase); Mid-Box Prep RegularCab 5.5' box (145" wheelbase) or Mid-Box Prep SuperCab 5.5' box (163" wheelbase). RegularCab and SuperCab 4x4 models require 36-gallon fuel tank, optional with 4x2.) Note: restrictions apply; see your dealer for more information."

So, in order to carry two sleds in the 5'5" bed, it would taxing the ratings of the vehicle at best (assuming you don't have the max payload package), and potentially unsafe on the downside. You also would be limied in what other cargo you carry after you install the deck and sleds. If you figure the sleds at close to 600lbs each and the deck at minimum of 300lbs (the full lotus looks like 450 easy) you have roughly 100 lbs for gear, fuel, and less than 2 passengers. Another consideration is do you have the fiscal wherewithal to handle the unfortunate occurrence of an at-fault accident while you are exceeding the vehicle ratings. Just because some others have jumped off the bridge, doesn't mean you have to. Just something to consider. I recommend getting a more suitable pickup for the job or just leaving your two place trailer as a trailer and not bother the risks and headaches.

Just thought I would add this I see several talking about adding the airbags which the firestone kit works great had it on my 07 F150 CC sb that I pulled my 25ft enclosed with and have them on my 08 F150 singlecab longbox work pickup and haul chemical totes and pallets of seed which weigh over 2k #s. The part I see missing is ditch the stock P rated tires. The soft sidewalls cause a lot of sway with heavy loads. Put some C rated tires on and it will handle weight a lot better.
