SKS Questions?

Anyone here use there SKS in low elevation for a 50/50 trail off trail sled?

If so how do you like it? Any problems with cooling? I was thinking a 2" track install or cut down the factory one would help on the trail.

How reliable has the new 800 HO been?

Thanks

3000 miles no problems. 2.6 track. Machine cools better then my 13 SBA 144x2.0. Scratchers are needed in hardpack conditions but that's standard for any big lug. Off trail it is way better then my SBA was. On trail it is tippier for sure and your not gonna run at the same speeds as a SBA. If you live in a snow belt area it's great for playing off trail. I'd call a SBA 50/50 the sks more a 80/20. Although I use it 1/2 time on trails because I can't afford 2 sleds and prefer the better handling and capability off trail. If you don't get snow where you jump off your sled and are waist deep the SBA is pretty good but needs a narrower stance.

Have one for the wife. Scratchers are a must on hardpck like said above. The shocks had to be recalibrate for her weight. Having the extra heat exchanger over the PRO RMK made me feel better and she loves the electric start. We ride trails as little as possible.

Don't buy the SKS for 50/50 sled.. Its no where close to that. Its manageable on trails but no where close to a legitimate trail sled. The Switchback Assault is what you want. Actually its what I want too. haha. I'm going to try my SKS on the widest ski stance possible next weekend, but I'm willing to bet I'll be on a SBA eventually as I truly am a 50/50 rider. I've seen older SBA go through a fair amount of snow, even with the 1.3 lug track. We get some really deep light snow around here.. You'll be extremely pleased with the 144 SBA! Trust me.

I have put about 150 miles on my SKS in the ND flatlands, it works fine but its not ideal. A Switchback Assault 144x2 sounds like the perfect sled for you, the new HO motor is awesome.

Why not Assault RMK ??

Got close to 1000 miles on my 17 and ordering a 18 Pink Ribbon for wife ..I trail ride here in Michigan if I have to ?

Has wide front and more Caster .. no cooler but I've ran with and without scratchers and one broke at times ..
124 with
135 with one broke
165 3 miles with little snow and no ice..

I have both a 16 sks and a 17 assault. sks has a 2.6 and is 90/10 sled for me. I only ride it on trail if I am riding with my wife and her sba. The sks is a bit more to handle in the trails, lots more rider input and wears you out a bit. The sba is easy to ride in the trails and is very capable off trail. Depends on your off trail conditions if a 144 will get you where you want to go. My wife loves her sba, but never goes off trail with it. Both stay cool for me, 124 most of the time. Scratchers help a bunch to stay cool and extend hifax life.

What Scratchers are you guys using, I brought mine by a shop and they said unless they remove boggie wheels they cannot run scratchers.

I use the cable kind.

I drilled a hole in the rail and mounted it. See the picture for the location.SKS ICE.jpg
