Skis for Apex

It is not just the keel it is the big flat side where it goes from a 5 + inch ski to the 7 " flare out. as soon as the 5'' section brakes through the crust the sides will not allow the ski to get turned -- any way they are pointed when the crust brakes is where they go , there is no give at all.
The VK ski still has a pretty good keel to allow for good steering but has none of the huge flat sides of the Mountain ski. The Mountain ski is a copy of the powder pro ski but where the powder pro has a smooth radius Yamaha mountain ski has a sharp 90 degree turns and flat sides.

i didn"t like the stock skis they were terrible unless you were in perfect snow if it was hard they really yanked the bars around so i went to slydog powder hounds and have had really good luck. they will hunt ruts on trails but do well off trail , try"d a set of gen 2 simmons but had trouble turning unless you were on perfectly flat ground and they are UGLY . i don"t think you will get two people that like the same setup so just close your eyes and put your finger down on a table with all the ski makers ads and start there . good luck:face-icon-small-hap

Thanks. Are the carbides just one in front of the other on the same runner or are they actually side by side?

They are side by side not on the same runner

I think thats what is going to end up happening, I dont think I could go with gen 2 anyways, because of my sled deck, with 2 sleds having skis that wide I dont think they would fit. I have the stock skis shimmed in the back right now, I will try that out and see how that works for me. Where we ride you have to travel on trails to get there.

Here is my impression of the Gen 2 I put them on the Phazer as well as the TRX1 .

Money well spend ------ The Phazer front end just floats in pow now and it holds a line be it powder or hard-pack boon-docking around trees the works.
The wide ski also makes the sled less tipi. It is Girlfriend approved!!!!!!

The Rx pretty much the same thing on the tight single track trails going up into the high alpine they will not dive into the sides --- just float up onto the pow and come right back on the trail .

You can just crawl around trees in tight areas. They are very stable at high speed even with the narrow frond end, The wider skis acts like a wide frond end.
If the skis are on the ground they sure hold a line well no mater if pow or hard-pack. I did set them up in the back hole for less stability an easier turning and 0 tow out . Steering is slightly heavier due to the dual keels but so accurate that it is well worth it. They carve fine although that is not there strong point feels like having a wider frond end, never to the point where I would have issues with it though.
I would say the benefits make them well worth the money.

Cheers...........

How do they sidehill?

No problem at all they cut the snow fine under power, they just make the frond end a bit wider ( the narrower the easier it is to side-hill and carve in pow) On the Powder pro skis we cut the outside wing from the spindle back to make them side-hill super easy That would for sure work with the gen 2 ski also, but I do not see the need for it , with the turbo I can lift them at will anyway.

Crossing the hard blown spots up in the passes where you just ride along the side-hill for several miles at slower speed with booth skis on the ground they are the best I have had.

cheers.......

I've always found the stock Yami powder skis to be great... IF you love the random acts of un-planned boondocking! Took them all off my sleds. The Gen 1's were OK but steer harder unless you shim them and adjust the limiters to lighten the steering. Didn't do much for the nose-diving in the pow though. The Gen 2's were about the same on hard stuff, but were awesome in the deep. Laying it over or cutting a sidehill was not a good option with them though. Now I have the Gen 3's and they seem to be the best combination on the Apex, at least by what I've found.

I think I'm going to slap the 7" Powder Hounds on my MTX and see how well the float. The had excellent flotation on the Mtn Viper; hopefully also on the MTX!

Ran genIIs on my Apex Dec.-Mar. then would put on stockers till June. Also cut outer edge off genIIs from bolt back, really helps sidehilling.

Just bolted on a set ( good deal ) really wanted the 8" wide ones.

Only did a little trail ride with them and found them laking in control on the soft trail.

Hope that they are better in the pow.

The 7" wide Slydogs your putting on? Let me know how they work out when you try them. I'm slapping them on my MTX also. I bet the 8" wide version would be nice with the heavy front end of the MTX, but hopefuly the 7" ones will be adequate.
