Skis for Apex

apex ski's

Gen2's for me. Float alot better, turn better, don't dart all over the hardpacked roads. JHMO

I used VK skis for the last 3 seasons on the TRX1 much better in crusty snow than stock all in all very forgiving and floats well.
I did get the simons gen 2 to try out but will go back to the VK skis in a hart-beat if I don't like them.
By the way the VK'S work awesome for backing up as well.

I just took a set of Gen II Simmons of my sled and sold them. They are the king of floatation but they don't sidehill and turn near as well as the stockers. You could still lay the sled over with ease but they just don't turning very aggressively. The width isn't as much of an issue as you'd think, it just takes some getting used to seeing that much ski in front of you. If you only ran bottomless powder, they'd be the ski to have. I really disliked mine in the trees as they aren't near aggressive enough. I just bolted on a set of powder pros I have yet to try.

I think the like and dislike of skis has more to do with the actual set up of the sled then it does with the skis. I put Gen II’s on my Apex and did not like them. I took them off and went back to stock. I liked the stock skis. Then one day I rode my buddies Apex with Gen II’s and loved them. We took some measurements of his sled compared to mine. I toed in about a 1/8 inch on each side (I have set my skis up about a 1/8 inch toe out for many years) and the Gen II’s felt like budder. I busted a ski and while I was waiting for Simmons to get me a part (which they sent me free of charge) I put my stockers back on and they worked so bad I had to go back to the trailer and toe out so I could stand to ride it for a day. Just for kicks we left the set up toe out when I put the Gen II’s back on and had to fight the sled until we toed in. Both skis work great when set up to their liking. I don’t feel like I loose anything running the GEN II’s as far as drivability, but I do feel like they give me added stability coming down steep chutes with deep cuts from turn out sleds which you do a lot with a turbo Apex.

Skis

One thing I have noticed with the gen2's is you do not "feel" as much of the under snow junk that you would normally feel through the bars with the stock ski's. They are def. not as aggressive as the stockers on trails/harder snow. These traits make it worthwhile for me. I run ALOT of ski pressure to aid keeping the front end down and the gen 2's really help with ease of turning. We ride some very tight trails and the width on the apex is no worse than the 43" ski-stance mxz/zr/iq type sleds. They do look like little kid snowboards up there though :D

I had the gen II on my apex and went back to the stock skis but added a set of dual carbides. I was much happier with this set up.

I did the same thing, sold the generation II, Wonder if PP with dual carbides would be better than stock with dual carbides for all around conditions.

Sorry if I missed it, but...

What about C&A Pro's, I have had great luck with those in the past...

any one who says Gen II's steer better need to ride a sled with stock skis. i have Gen II's and they do float wonderfully and handle well in deep snow but since they have two carbides, when you turn (since the spindle is at a forward angle) you have to lift one carb off the ground. lifting your sled makes it harder to steer. it depends on how you ride. personaly i would never buy a pair of deul carbide skis again, although i like my Gen II's. i wish some one would make a 10" wide pair of skis with only one carbide.

I don't have any pictures of them. Climbmax told me to try them, they get rid of the darting on the trail and when the snow is crusty. They are a yamaha part, so your local dealer should be able to get them for you.

Thanks. Are the carbides just one in front of the other on the same runner or are they actually side by side?

I'd like to know more about these ski's! Do they have a deep keel like the stock Mnt. ski's?

The VK ski takes the same carbides ski loop and rubber stops that came on the 04 RX1, You need the little base-plate that goes under the rubber stop and the spacers to Adjust the ski stance are a bit different so you need them.
It is a straight ski no fuss with a relatively deep keel and a good kick up in the back for easy backing up. The Keel looks a bid wider and it has less rocker than the mountain ski.
It had much better manners than the Mountain ski noting wild and wonderful, just does the job and well in all conditions and floats better in the pow too.
It should also accommodate the dual carbides if you so desire.
The cheapest most durable ski you can get.
I will give a update on the gen 2s as soon as I get out 5 feet of pow just 1.5 hrs south of here.

You didn't answer how wide they are? You said they float better then the stock 7" width Mnt. ski's but how wide are they? Some of the parts interchange with 04RX-1 but what about an Apex Mnt. is this the same ski.....since this is what most of use are talking about? Thank you this look promising!

So in you peoples opinion is the deep keel the main problem with the Yamaha skis? If so then basically any ski with a shallower keeep would be better.
