skid bolt removal

Any good tricks to get the skid bolts out? Got one of each but the others just spin. Tried tightening a bolt with a couple nuts on no go. Am I going to have to cut the head of the bolt off or is there an easy trick Thanks
 
i us an impact and it makes it super easy. just bust one loose with the impact and then bust the other side loose...then they should turn out pretty easy... this has always worked for me
 
On cross shafts you sometimes have to re-tighten the bolt that will come out then the other can be removed. Air tool or electric impact help.
 
Take the first bolt out, add a jam nut and reinsert bolt part way. Then you can break the opposite side loose because it is tight against the jam nut on the first side. Then remove both bolts.
 
best thing to work for me is what Morsno said as well.

don't cut the head off. you'll still have the same issue trying to get the rest of the bolt out but will be extremely hard then.

what also usually works for me is to just break them both loose at the same time. if one comes out easier than the other, tighten that side up and then work the other side loose first. Then just use a socket on both at the same time.
 
I use a jam nut as well. Only way to do it if you ask me.

I thing he stated in his post that he had tried a double jam nut if I read it right. Jam nut has always worked for me. What about removing the grease zerk and installing a set screw? You might also have your buddy grab the housing with a pair of Channel Loc's and squeezing to put pinch in the inner shaft just a bit, probably best right at the end just inside the tunnel. Good luck. EW.
 
Thanks everyone. Ya double jam nut nothing Still would still turn and was actaully eating away at the tunnel.oh and the grease zerk idea there was none that cant be good.. We finally got it not sure if i should tell you cause you might cringe a bit. But we actually used an easy out on the side that was out. there is no threads for about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in the shaft so i figered what the hey im running out of options. Actually worked awesome on the front bolt but the back was a little tighter so im not sure how the threads are but i think they are ok. Going to run a thread chaser down it to make sure but for future reference i think it worked well.
 
Dont have a clue why the jam nut wouldnt work its just one of those things and thats how my life seems to go nothing ever easy. Those bolts were frickin tight , but i got them.

Why wont the jam nut work for you?

Well think about it for a second..........1...... You have your jam nut on one side and you are turning the bolt on the opposite side to the left and the bar in there is turning. On the opposite side the jam nut is against the tunnel and not moving so what happens is it wants to un thread the jam nut side because that bar is still turning.
 
Ya they were corroded pretty bad an impact would not break them free on the rear worked on the front though.

If your impact wouldn't break those 3/8 bolts with Polaris' pink loctite loose, then you need a little heavier artilliery...Trade talk.

The 1/4"-1/2" space before the threads start is normal. The bolts have a shoulder that is used to align the rear suspension to the tunnel.
