Side panel...alumn. plate?

wondering if any one out there has run there sled without the aluminium plate on the exhaust side panel? just wondering if you could run with out it and maybe just add heat tape?
thanks

I agree with MORSNO.

Heat tape isn't going to stop a hot can from melting the panel when it's on it's side.

you will need the aluminum plate for when you lay it over. I have even put a small dent in the aluminum plate from the muffler making contact on it from laying it over

We've talked about this in another thread...

On a sub 440 lb sled....stock... why the need to shave ounces from it?

The foam does hold water and is there for EPA radiated noise regs... I can see ditching that... If you ditch the aluminum panel... Use a bit better than heat tape IMO... though others on here have used used simple heat tape.

I'm a fan of the true heat protection films from www.thermalprotectioninc.com

.

I removed all the foam except the foam under the plate. I left the plate, the foam under the plate and glued the 4 tabs that hold the plate to the panel with black Ultra RTV.

stock can = leave foam and plate alone. Aftermarket can = remove foam and plate and add heat tape. With aftermarket cans there is lots of clearance between it and the side panel.

No foam, no plate, stock exhaust, 2-cool vent=0 issues for me:face-icon-small-hap

Tick, tick, tick.....melt. Note to self...never carve right

It'll happen eventually. but to each his own.

Just get some of the heatsheild thats used in the circle cars from summit, super stickey and you can lay the muffler on it and the plastic wont melt..yeah its expensive (65.00) but it works....this stuffs the bomb and you can put down 2 layers thick if you want to

Oh i agree with the above, normal heat tape wont cut it if can lays on it

I had new panels from day one last year and they didn't come with the aluminum or foam either. After a full season of riding and laying it over on that side hundreds of times per ride there was not even so much as an inclination that the panel was being affected.

Oh and I did have the stock can, not sure if that matters or not.

I melted my stock panel pretty bad from it laying on the right side a little too long last year. I was tired so I didn't flip it up right away and it melted along the indented line of the panel. I stitched it up with white zip ties, looked kinda cool actually. Traded panels with my buddy and he put a wrap on and it seems to be ok so far. I think he did some sort of plastic welding or bonding on it though.
