shovel on back or sled?

I just got my new ABS pack - Escape 15.
Really nice pack! The only think is I can't get the shovel inside and there is no place for it to go on the outside.
Is it bad to put the shovel inside the bag on the sled?
Are there any stats on when avalanches happen how many searchers lose their sled and can't get to the their sled packs?

ALWAYS KEEP ALL RESCUE GEAR ON YOUR BACK! The reason for this, is that you may be involved in an avalanche and not buried, but your sled might be and also your friend, then your gear is in your sled and you are screwed for helping out. Also you don't forget things at your sled when you go up on a slide path. Never leave your gear anywhere, always have it with you, not just gear, first aid supplies, something to eat and drink should always be in your pack.

i need to buy a new shovel then... what is the best one to get that is smaller but still good and has a saw in it...

There is a sled buried here (the gear was on the sled, not on the rider).

Starting to see parts of the sled after digging (it took MANY hours to dig this sled out)

If you have an avalanche airbag pack, it is recommended that you have a shovel in the pack and on the sled. The reason. If you get stuck in the runout zone or on an avalanche slope, you do not want to take off the avalanche airbag pack to get at your shovel. Call www.snowavigear.com at 970-401-4208 (Colorado). They stock the Escape 15 and plenty of shovels. They'll check and see what fits.

yes I am seeing what you guys mean... I am going to go with 2 shovels small one on me and put the one I have on the sled.
Those are very good points!

shovels

i used to have the escape 15 i had my shovel on the out side of the pack, i wish i saved pic's its a smaller bca shovel works good . but i also carry a bigger shovel on the back of the sled, safer that taking off the pack and easyer, way simpler to just take the big one off the back for the soft fresh snow when you are stuck, the one in the pack is only for rescue

anyone have a pic of how to mount a shovel on outside? there is not netting or anything to keep it from slidding up or down...

Snow Pulse 30L Rocks

I have a Snow Pulse 30 L backpack and it rocks. Has plenty of room for shovel probe and xtra gear.

It is recommended that you carry the shovel in your back pack if you are going to have only one shovel. If you have 2 carry one and attach the other to your sled.

take the ice axe loop at the bottom, put it through your D handle & then put the lower strap through the loop, the shovel blade stays on just fine.

I spend most of my time jumping, and have never had it come off.

Pretty sure you could wrap a t handle in the ice axe loop & do pretty much the same thing, but I don't have any T handle shovels to test that with.

What shovel?

Let me preface my opinion on shovels with this: Being buried in an avalanche (most of the time) is a matter of choice not chance. If an avalanche accident occurs we have made a mistake either in planning or acting. We should not justify our travel techniques and group management with the fact that we carry certain equipment (beacon, shovel, probe). These are RESCUE tools not SAFETY tools. That being said...

The Ortovox Kodiak is the only shovel on the market worth having. Period. Size of the shovel should not be a consideration (within reason). Digging efficiency and strength should be the main considerations.

Assuming searchers are rock solid on beacon searching, digging is the most tiring and time consuming part of rescue. After a fast search and probe strike, no other tool will reduce burial/digging time like this thing. The Kodiak moves snow 10 to 1 faster than conventional shovel designs with less effort.

Unless you have tried one, you won't believe this...if you have tried it and you do believe, testify :)

As was said above, keep your gear on you.

RIDE safe out there.
