Should I mod up my 10/22 ?

Was thinking of modding my Ruger 10/22 I bought years ago

damm thing never shot worth a damm

Was thinking of converting it to .17, just wondering if this round was all it was wrote up to be?

Should I stick with .22 and put on a heavy barrel and target type stock, perhaps a match sear/hammer some trigger work and such

my boy is 9 now, need to get him into shootin stuff and get him a hunters ed card, a 22 mod would be fun to do together.

I have one , put a Butler Creek bull barrel and synthetic stock on it, With a cheap 4x scope and it is deadly on grouse and ground squirrels. I have less than 5hundy into it and it's prob one of my favorite guns to shoot. Wish I would have had one as a kid.

this looks very interesting to me

a .17 mach 2 conversion, squirrel slayer!

think it would be great for yotes too

looks to be just under $600 (minus bi-pod) , ready to shoot w scope and some accurizing goodies inside.

A little piece of advise.. if you want to do a 17 hmr.. you will need to find a 10/22mag action.. the regular 10/22 action will not hold up.. trust me i've built a lot of them.. It will work for a 17 mach 2..

As for what you do.. it all depends on how much money you are looking to spend.. and what kinda accuarcy you are looking for.. the best bang for the buck is volquarstan trigger and sear.. then go with a boyd stock.. and a match grade bull barrel.. either kreigoff, valquarsten, douglas, etc..

ohh and your above link.. is for an hmr2 (which is the mach 2) based off of the 22lr.. unlike the 17 hmr which is based off of a 22mag

ya for the mach 2.. i personally wouldnt spend a lot on tricking it out personally.. nothing really to gain.. IMO you would be better off to leave it a 22 and put a few mods in it.. as for your son, it would make it a lot eaiser of a plinking gun and way cheaper on ammo

ya I'm thinking the same thing, been doing a lot of reading

the .17hmr would be the one I would want, hm2 is better then 22lr but thats a lot of coin for not a lot of better.

I'd be better off just getting a small cal centerfire for myself and give him the 22lr

Buy yourself a CZ 452 and insta-accuracy! Cheaper than modding out your 10/22, though its not semi-automatic. Oh, by the way, military .223 ammo is about the same price as 17 HMR/22 Mag!

If you just want to buy one already modded buy one of these

we can sell you one probably cheaper than most. Throw a KIDD trigger on it and bueno :) they shoot awesome

i have magnum lite graphite, nice little gun had an extra 6.5-20 vari x 3 laying around and put that on there. it's amazing how the different ammo shoots i found the vipers to be the best. do you have any input on ammo

They are sweet  I wish I had one when I was a kid, id be responsible for the depletion of small game around here...

im guessing thats got a carbon fiber?

Carbon fiber is really really really finicky on ammo types, reason being the steel incert compaired to the tensile strength and wraps of the fiber. It may like your ammo 1 day, BUT, you could put the same ammo through it and it could be loaded just a bit differently, and Bueano  there goes your accuracy.

Its almost like the Carbon Fiber barrels need to be Cryogenically treated or something. They shoot awesome, just a semi auto and a carbon fiber barrel combo can be a great thing or a dissapointing thing.

Also, all .17 ammo is made in the same factory :) just like there are only 2 companies in the whole world who make AR lower recievers. With your .17's its not so much the ammo as the way the barrel is throated. just my opinion.

the 2 mods you should do to that 10/22 to make it accurate IMO is a really nice trigger and a great stock.

just what you said carbon fiber barrel shoot good one day with one ammo but not so good the next day

I have about $400 into mine and it does well inside of 100 yds. Any further and I use my .204. A box stock 10/22 is good enough for a youngster and you can save a few bucks for sled $!!! Just my .02

I did a trigger kit on mine it helped out allot. But I am glad I saved my money for a good long range 22-250. I still use the 22 wile I let the barrel cool down on my 22-250 I think if I did anything else I would get a nice stock for it.

I just bought a 17 hmr and am pretty disappointed. The ammo is too expensive and I can only get great groups with one brand. I wish I would have bought a well set up 10-22...had one a long time ago and loved it.
A good gopher gun should be semi-auto imo. Also, you can still afford to shoot a couple hundred rounds in a day.
