Shipping Sleds for a Out West Trip

6 of us from New England are looking to make a trip for a week 4-6 days of riding out West. We would really like to bring/ride our own sleds and the going rate for an RMK is $300 a day from what I read. Are there any companies or LTL carriers that ship sleds back and forth for this type of trip? It would save two of us 6 days on the road to and from.

I have made the trip from NE out west many times. We have done the math 10 different ways. For us, its cheaper and better to just haul our own stuff out. Depending on where you are going, its a SOLID 30+ hour trip. It sucks, but when your there, you have all you gear, tools, fuel, sleds etc. Althought it costs you and extra 2 days each way, its worth it. Feel free to PM me, I will happily provide any insight. Infact we are driving to Wyo this winter :)

You might get more feedback putting this in the general forum.
Rental rates are closer to 225.00 and there are companies that do this but they are in the midwest. I'm guessing your just going to have to start check with shippers and see what kind of rates you can get. I dont think it will be worth it after you pay to have the shipped twice.

I would also check with a resort on a group price, during the week for 6 sleds. Im guessing you can get a deal and get the pricing under 200.00 per day. Eric

I've hauled my boats back and forth from Cape Cod to Florida. Two 14 hour days Max speed of 65. It's not the end of the world and the sleds/gear would be much lighter than my 8-10,000lb boats! May just have to bite the bullett and do it the drive. Fly the women and men hit the road. Other issue is clutching/elevation. We've all got Pro's. Is there a great place/state to ride where we would need to screw with the elevation adjustments?? Below 8,000 feet?

Only adjustment needed is clutch weights. bring whatever weight you need for your elevation. 5 min swap in the parking lot or home. No other adjustments needed.

Not sure where you are looking to rent out west, but most places around West Yellowstone and Island Park are under $ 200.00 per day for an 800 Pro RMK or Summit.
A typical 500 lb pallet shipped LTL runs me around $100.00. A sled will take 3 pallet spaces in a semi trailer so do the math.

A complete flatbed load hauling both ways has been costing me around $2000.00.

These prices are shipping within the Midwest. You're looking at 2-3 times the distance. Factor in shipping delays due to weather and you could have a mess of a trip on your hands.

I would rent or trailer them out.

Where out west? And when? From here in Northern MN it took us 22 hours to get to Togwotee WY.
Weather is such a big factor. Hauling sleds in a blinding snow storm or a ice covered highway can be a challenge. We do haul our own sleds and we take our time. If you care to, PM me if you have any questions. Stay safe!!:face-icon-small-hap

I think I would rent. Get the insurance and if you wreck one you can jump on another one and ride again. Where are you riding at? If it's in utah maybe we can meet up.

I say figure out the total cost of travel, hotel rooms out, time off from work driving... everything. Then figure out what the total experience is worth - I would much rather fly out, rent sleds, stay in a nice place and then fly home. I also figure the what "if's" traveling that far - wreck the trailer on the way out and now nobody can go, get stuck in weather or have truck issues and now the trip is delayed a day and you loose a day of riding. Not knowing what type of sleds you ride, but I would rather ride sleds that are tuned and setup for the area, if you have an issues then take it back and get another sled to ride.

I also understand the experience of taking the road trip with buddies and fixing sleds until way into the night and morning so you can ride the next day - those are what makes trips great and stories for years to come.

Get with Cody at CM Backcountry Rentals -http://www.cmbackcountryrentals.com

He can hook you up with some great running sleds, get you in touch with some killer cabin rentals and if you ask nice - even show you around the McCall Idaho area.

Personally I don't like to rent sleds but perhaps you should look into a group rate. My one ton duramax pulling a all aluminum gooseneck with 6 sleds takes $1000.00 worth of fuel to run to Island Park and back to west Wisconsin you will double that. Six days on the road with meals and rooms is going to add up! As mentioned earlier, U ship may be able to line up something. Line up a few more guys and just get a truck load rate which will still probably be a couple bucks a mile. Fun just cost too much!!!
