Service Honda- 2013 KX500AF Build Project

With the Service Honda ignition did you run a battery with the DC system ? I see with the AC you just hook a light up to it but with the DC unit it shows a battery. How did you do yours ?

Your power all comes out of the stator as AC. Bikes, Sleds etc. There is a small regulator/rectifier it passes through before it goes to your lights, grip warmers, instruments etc. They are all DC. I simply mounted a small regulator/rectifier, about the size of a cel phone, on the inside, right side panel in the air box. Then attached my hot lead and ground to it. From there I ran one ground wire to the frame and the "now DC" hot and ground to my electrical items. Very clean and no extra stuff. No dead battery etc. When you start up, everything powers up. When you shut down, everything dies. Super nice and clean. Just like a sled without a battery. You don't need one. This is much cleaner and very simple. You have all electrical needs met but do not need a battery.

We have produced a small video for you all on Randy's Service KX500AF. This was merely a test and tune with Randy, myself, and another KX450F. We didn't spend a whole lot of time recording today but I felt there was enough video here to put together a quick teaser before we really start to shoot more in-depth rides in the upcoming months.

I still love the thumpers but this 2 smoker is a MONSTER... no doubt. When you are cracked WOT it does not back off when you hit big snow holes and just screams through. I gotta admit, I was impressed.

Video says it all!

Nicely done! I'm guessing there will be a bunch of 450s for sale soon! Love the comparison hill climbs at the end! Keep up the great work and informative posts!

Thanks everyone, It is a test bed for carburated big bore 2-strokes. It is a ripper for sure. The comparison footage speaks for itself. It is the next level above a 450F, but will slide between them and the turbo's coming soon. For people who love the aggressive nature of a CR or KX 500, this is very, very fun and raises the bar.

Not trying to be a party pooper -- but the 450F was not exactely bouncing of the rev limiter hiting the hill, the 2 stroke on the other hand was nicely on the pipe.
I have a hard time going back to carbs now that I have run EFI on all my equipment. Now a direct injection CR 500 :face-icon-small-dis

Ya, the 450 was trying to pull the higher gear i was pulling. Not enough ponies to pull a high gear up the steep and heavy deep snow. He needed to be down in second, but then the track speed would be gone. The KX500AF is geared "up" and can still pull 3rd and 4th and hold them at WOT. The extra 20hp makes a big difference.
The carb has it's unique advantages. You never get over-fueling from cold temps or gas in your oil. You simply jet it spot on and there it stays. It never dumps excess fuel in cold temps or trys to second guess what the fuel needs are. No EFI tuner or programmer needed. Very consistent.

Another thing to note was that this video is not out there to show that the 500AF just absolutely dominates the 450 because of this video "proof". We were playing around and doing this video as a side to getting out and enjoying our first couple of rides. I just figured because they were both hitting the same hill I might as well throw in some side by side comparison. You can claim all kinds of reasons why the KX450 didn't make it up that hill, but honestly that wasn't the purpose of this clip.

Thanks Rush, well said. That wasn't the point at all. It was just a coincidence that we were both beating up that spot together. Any of the stock 450's work incredibly well right off the showroom floor. I rode one for the last 2 years and loved it. We continue to expand options and develop new high performance alternatives. R&D helps the entire industry as a whole. I took a sneak peak at an incredible high tech, state of the art turbo set-up the other day. The technology and advancements are moving forward at full throttle! Ha!, Pun Intended....... fun, fun, stuff!

Craigs List ad reads : 2013' CR450R, trade for any CR/KX500!

Thank the snow gods we're not in a recession, otherwise this sports growth would be held back!:face-icon-small-win

Please show us the dollar figures associated to the original breakdown, try not to leave anything out, including minimum wage for the hours spent on this passion/hobby.

Believe it or not I'm not trying to be smart or underhanded with my request, it's my second favorite thread after Carbondaddy's CR project. A motorcyclist most of my life I never had a need nor want of one of these bikes on the dirt even after trying one, same goes for the current 450's but at least they are manageable. To most the bikes of Rossler, Bailey, Hammel, Johnson, and Ward are legend and their value is solely sentimental or good in the sand. Those of you with turbo projects on the four strokes I'm sure will be sharing you results for a mere $29.95. :face-icon-small-hap

When I talk about it, this thread only annoys my wife when I remind her how much she paid for "her" 98' KX500. As of now yours has more hr's than it, but at $1,500.00 I am sure it's money in the bank. Some day I will finish my project, for now I am just blowing alot of hot air.

My point is, those of you reading this and wondering what current bike, or mods should I consider before dipping your toes in this sport. How bout leave your beloved trail/mx machine alone, better yet get rid of that one size fits all tight woods/dunes bike and replace with a sweet 200 XCW etc.

Snap up any one of the Craigs List liquid 500's usually one owner, go through it if needed, set it up for winter duty, attach a MH and enjoy. If anything you experience is close to Carbondaddy's or mtn-doo's videos you win! As a prize you get to keep the $10,000.00 difference.

Yes, This package is fairly expensive. The point of a new 2013 set-up is this Bike will be on the road to Dealers from Colorado to the Canadian border on demo tours. The R&D is expensive but that is how new products and innovation move forward. We will be able to have all the bases covered, from the standard 450F's, to big enduro's with e-start and lights, to 2-strokes, and turboed long tracks. The options are are being developed and provide some fun choices for everyone.

I saw on the KX/CR thread. snowhawkaddict posted a ton of Big 2's for sale. It is a great way to build a fairly inexpensive hot-rod! The particular's to get one set up to work well are also inexpensive and work very well.

Trail Tech inline temp gauge. This thing is super slick. No electricity needed. Guaranteed to last 5 years. Hook it up inline from the "hot" line out of your head. We don't have to wonder what our temps actually are. I tested with a heat gun last year and found the 70C Thermostat was keeping temp's near 160F. Good temps for a four stroke, but a bit warmer than ideal for a two stroke. I found in the cold pow verses a packed road, temps would rise and fall. I am going to test a new thermostat I found along with this gauge. The new thermostat is a single line, straight through tipe. No installing in the "Y", and no blocking off the re-circ nipple. It will be in the 130F range. Ideal for a two stroke.

Great thread... lots of thought and super clean build.

Thank you for taking the time to put this up for our readers !

Hope to see this beast when I come up to ride with Allen and talk him into a road trip (wink).

Hey guys,
Here's a sneak peak of the next performance mod we have all been looking for. No more jetting, period! Highly atomized fuel over the more liquid state our simple EFI's and Carb's deliver, and altitude compensating advantages that our simple EFI systems cannot deliver. We are very excited to put this to the test. It could be the "no hassle" answer for all of our carbed "and" efi bikes, with simple efi systems. It also applies equally to 4-strokes and 2-strokes. Here's a link to the company site. The technical advantages are impressive. They equipped a Pikes Peak race bike, "4-stroke", and it ran consistent AFR's and EGT's from a sea level base setting, to the top of Pikes Peak at 14 thousand feet! No jetting required. wow!
Now it's going to be put to the test in the mountains and snow.
Check this out.
