rx1 motor in a boat?

  • Thread starter Thread starter Rv
  • Start date Start date
would this motor handle being ran hard all day on the water

my son thinks this will be his project for next summer he wants to couple it up to a small jet in a 16' aluminum boat

With proper cooling the engine will be fine. Not sure about the boat he is trying to mate it up to. Depending on the keel shape and weight, it still might be like putting a school bus on nitrous. If you are going to pay for an RX-1 engine, don't skimp out on the details of a well matched chassis to mate it too.

I'm not sure whats in those small jet boats that seadoo makes, but could you imagine a turbo'd yami 4-stroke in one of those???

At least it would soound awesome!!!!

the new seadoo's have a 4 stroke supercharged 255 horse rotax

I was around one this past weekend...everyone was gushing over it...and touching themselves.......they told me how much I needed to get on it and ride...how it would pull my hands off the bars. OMFG this thing is FAST.

I don't ride a lot of PWCs, but all I can is weeeeeeellll, it reminded me of a 130hp snowmobile. That's it.

Ya I was gonna say, to feel real performance out of a jet boat, it takes a lot of power. Not sure if there is an equaltion for resistance .vs. weight .vs. power in jet boats, but your son might be intrested in looking before he dumps a LOT of money into this....

I agree riding PWC's is fun for about 5 min then Yawn.

he figured he could do it for $5000 including a turbo to make it 200+ horse or so

I wouldn't waste your time.
The older sea doo boats had dual 687? upright and dual 787cc layed down 2 stroke engines with rave valves and dual jets.
With Proper jetting and impellers @ 4500 feet top speed was about 55mph with the dual 787 version.
We had one as a demo at the shop I worked at... It was fun, but did not accelerate very quickly and sucked down fuel like crazy!
Big time compromise between acceleration and top speed.
We tried impellers that were good for skiing and top end suffered.

Now if you mated it up to a v-drive?????

Now youd get some speed out of her!!

Especially if you used the gearbox!:D

Another sugestion would be to find a totaled pwc had a friend who did that and just transferred jet and motor from that into a 14 foot jon boat did I menchen that thing was fast and scary

In the Bond movie were he has that little 1 seater black boat he has a chevy v8(dont remember if it was big or small) a jet pump and a real small aluminum boat.

Now yes it was a movie, but I watched a show were the owner took it out on the river and it was almost as good as in the movie. Granted they had a bit bigger budget than you are lookin at.

Part of the thing guys forget when about a Jet on a boat or PWC is putting a jet foot on a motor it drops the performance vs a prop. When we were shopping around for ours the guys that run jets told us a jet performance wise is 30% less compared to the same motor with a prop on it. So 200 hp motor with a jet is more like running a 160 hp propped boat. This is what we run. www.phantomjetboat.com/photo_gallery.htm
Sure seems like it would be a lot of effort and investment into something that he prob wouldn't ever be able to get the cash back out of.

I know that jets are hard to setup. I have heard of some being able to get out on plane and then push the jet from the water. They seem to want to cavitate so easily, I have a hewes craft, one rock in the grate and it cavitates. Not saying it cant be done, alot of people build their own, ask the fellas on this site, kind of the snowest of jetboats. A lot of people building their own "mods" that can give you some great advice...good luck!

I looked at the phantom boats too, free DVD from their site if you want to watch some crazy river runs! Awesome boat, I just wanted something I could run on the big lake also, hence the hewes craft.
