Routine Maintenance

so i'm getting ready to snow check a 2012 pro rmk and i've been checking this forum out for a while and was wondering what everyone is doing for routine maintenance on theses sled. this will be my first sled since i was a kid so i'm pretty new to all of it. i am no where near a mechanic or anything but i'm not afraid to dive in and work on it if i know what i'm supposed to be doing or trying to do. everyone talks about cleaning something like valves or something else what exactly is that? Do you change the oil every 200 miles or something? what other oils do you need to change and when? i'd like to keep my sled at tip top shape when i get it so i'm doing the research now. any help will be appreciated, Thanks

Yes, Cleaning Exh. Valves is needed.. every 1000 miles..

Changing Chain case oil every 500 miles..

looking everything over aka,, belt, track tension, oil level.. EVERY RIDE..

Fill GAS and RIP!

Exh. Valves..

are on the front on the engine..

It takes about 3 hrs..

Really all your doing is Cleaning OLD Oil and Carbon off them..

Carb Cleaner and a razor blade.. Q Tips work well.. to get picky

heres a pic..

What Matt said. Grease the skid every 500. Chain case very easy to change, at least for me, check chain adjustment at same time. New fuel filter every 1000 IMHO. Ves Gold Plus oil. Pull the rope and go.

what exactly is cleaning Exh. Valves? Exh stands for....?

Exhaust valves. These sleds have elctrically operated valves that open the exhaust chamber at progrssively as you activate the throttle keeping back pressure when you need it but allowing the engine to dump exhaust when your on the trigger. You'll see in the diagram they are located above the exhaust Y-Pipe. If this is your first exposure to to these newer style motors I would think it would be worth your time to have a dealer tech or a "truely" knowledgable friend perform the services for you while you watch and learn. If you are getting a new sled it would be a great time to leverage your dealer into including this as part of the sale.

I bought my first Harley last year and I did just that. I stipulated in the sale that I wanted to be there while my bike got it's 1000/5000/10,000 mile services. I took a yellow pad, camera, and a bottle of Crown for the tech. I learned a ton, and now with the service manual and a few tools I am good to go on the basics.

You might consider that type of approach until you have had a little time around this new technology. Good luck and good on ya for asking. EW

You'll see the Exh. valves just above the Y-Pipe where both cylinders dump into one. They have the black caps just under the crossbar

They spew this crap into your belly pan that you'll want to keep and eye on too

OK, I haven't drank in like 20 years. When I did I had to avoid the hard stuff due to German dad and Indian mom. A couple shots of the good stuff and I could just feel with my keen senses that a guy with his back to me was wanting to fight and thought I didn't know i. Anything but beer either swelled up my eyes or my hands. Never developed a knowledge of good whiskey.

What is Pendleton's? Sometimes life requires us to grease a sqeeky wheel once in a while and I have always used Crown for that purpose. Would Pendleton's be a better grade of grease? EW

yeah Eric, I dont drink much anymore either..but pendeltons is the new crown of grease.......

Oven cleaner actually works a helluva lot better than the solvent cleaners when it comes to exhaust valves and no razor blades or marring the finish required. Simply spray on and wait an hour or two - wipe off and go! And I do the opposite of Napamatt - valves every 500 miles and chaincase fluid (IF using synthetic) every 1,000.

Have FUN!

Drain for CC is on the bottom of sled, fill is through the right foot stop. I use a hand vacuum pump, tho I've also used a large squirt bottom with the tube on it in the past, the kind hand cleaner comes in. Drain out the bottom, wipe magnetic plug of metal. Put plug in. Suck up about 10oz of poo syn chain lube into the pump, hose goes in case, fill to top with one easy push, reinstall fill plug, also magnetic, after wiping it, too. Gotta say, the poo syn is sure lots easier to work with than the doo syn. Go poo...

Ah, good point. We don't get the temp fluctuations out here that you guys do so not an issue with condensation so much but I can see why you'd do it more often.

Cheers,

So the exhaust valves for the 2011's are controlled electronically? The 2010- are mechanical using spring tension. Sounds complicated??

I always soak them in gasoline to get the gum loose.

they are the same as the 08-10 motors, they are mechanical, but they use a electrically controlled solenoid to vent the pressure to control the opening/closing points...over all a simple system..(the electrical control seems to be for EPA passage rather then better performance....
