Rookie at clutching!

Hey!

I'm still running my hawk (600 - 06) whith stock cluthing. Looking at the other posts about the subject, no one tells me wich belt to use whith TRA III/II drive clutch and stock driven?

Another Q, Is there any driven clutch that bolts right on?

Clutching

I have personally used the formula secondary that comes stock on these machines for a number of years on sleds and my hawk, I think that they work fine when setup properly. Just my opinion though. I think that you can still run the polaris xlt belt with that setup and just re-adjust your secondary to get the belt up to the top or slightly above the secondary sheaves. Simply doing this gives you more bottom end due to the increased ratio, I found that the stock belt was too short to allow the clutches to fully shift and the longer belt eliminated this. Anyone else?

Thanx for the info.

I got a deal on a TRA 3 light racing, from a 440.
How god/bad is it setup for my hawk? Is it just bolt on and use it as it is? or do I need to change some weights or ramps?

All for now

i could be rong, but im pretty sure that the most performance you will get by changing the primay to a tra3 is more top end (since its about 2 " bigger) i just picked one up myself! the secondary is where you will get the most performance incress! stock one on the 600 blows. look at a artic cat roller or team secondary. any one else wanna chime in?

Re: Clutching

The tra from the 440 will likely need some different ramps and a different spring. I used a setup similar to what would be in your clutch and it was very hard to ride. The 440's have a high and abrubt engagement, when trying to go at slow speeds it's almost impossible to feather in. You can go with a ramp that has the same profile but without the engagement 'notch' and a spring with a softer starting rate but a similar finish rate - this will lower your engagement and smooth it out but keep the aggressive upshift to make 'er move! The stock primary is smaller in diameter but the main disadvantage is that it just uses these three pucks that push outward - no ramp/arm profile to tune the upshift for the weak spots in the powerband of the engine. You can make the secondary work as good as most roller secondaries if you order the plastic buttons from a '97 mxzx that have the teflon inserts, and there are lots of helix options for the formula secondary as well. Keep in mind that the secondary has the largest impact on backshifting and is not the key to getting a good upshift. Once again this is my opinion, so take it for what it's worth.

Ultimax3 144-4740U3, your 600 is 138-4628U3, first number is the length in mm.
Larger diameter of TRA III requires longer belt.
Belt manufacturers have catalogs/online cross references showing competitors equivilant part numbers, Gates, etc. if you prefer.

The 144 is similar in length to the Polaris OEM XLT last #'s 1042 belt I have mentioned as a cheap, under $50.00 longer belt for 503F/600HO Snow Hawks using stock clutches. Does not last long on 800.

Other forum members have found other options, but these are a shure fit after clutch adjustment.

Older keyway style is different by smaller diameter than other OEM, may be able to purchase from TEAM replacement 1997 MXZX secondary. Yet not cost effective over bushing up shaft and grinding key or upgrading to steel replacement to accept Arctic Cat secondary found used readily.

Machining sheaves to minimum thickness required to allow lowest gear ratio starting gear and belt fit Artic Cat belt works best. Replacement shaft, machining and belt part #, contact Yamacat/Bud, Hawkdoggen/Skip, Hawkafied/Andrew.

TRA has many part number differences when compared 800, 600, 440MXZX, MXZ, Summit, etc. Simplify by making sure you get direct 600-600 then install OEM pins, ramps, spring for your application.

Comet has very good almost equivalents/replacements. http://www.shadetreepowersports.com...Page?htmlPage=snow/engine/clutch-kits.html#sd

Save your pennies this is why Twoskis are allways broke, once you start there's no turning back!;)
