Riveted Drive Shaft

You obviously have some concern about this driveshaft not holding, especially under boost. Have you guys seen any failures?

It is actually becoming quite common up here in Canada on stock sleds.
I had a good look at the shaft yesterday and quite honestly it looks like it is bound to fail. We are taking precautionary measures which will be way better than a heli ride if we get in a place where the sled can't be towed.

I bet Robbie from Avid could crank out pieces to slide over the end of the shaft and stop the problem...:face-icon-small-win

that looks like a very ingenuitive fix Neil, should certainly prevent the stub from spinning in the shaft and removeable should the shafts be recalled. nice work

Question for you guys..

The ways above are good and we are considering producing "our" method of fixing this potential problem area (BTW, I do know of some failures in this area already)

So, question, would this be worth us doing and selling, or are you guys more inclined to wait for a recall from Polaris??

Problem I see and know, is that IF and when this fails, the sled willbe absolutely un-towable. This is a big problem..

Please let me know your thoughts on fixing it now, or waiting for a recall (that may or may not come)

Priced right, I WILL BUY! I live too far away from my riding to be worrying about my driveshaft. Belts are one thing, easily repaired. Driveshaft would be catastrophic failure 30 miles into the backcountry.
 
I would buy one as well. It may be along time for polaris to decide to recall the shaft or not if its truely a problem and I would rather be riding.
 
I think the full recall will take a solid 2 months.. But again, the real issue lie in the fact that the sled is un-towable if it does fail.. ..

We will try and have some product finished this week.. Still not sure how many to make..

Kelsey, are you willing to tell us what you have in mind for a fix yet? Also being that the other side is the same is there any concern that could eventually fail as well?

A sled with a broken drive shaft is easily towed with a plastic sled under the track.

Yeah, I saw those things, kind of pricey. I'll spend that money on a permanent fix for the driveshaft.

When an Axle snaps its typically under a heavy load on a pull. Been over the bars and thats a scary thought on a technical climb. An aftermarket fix that puts strength ahead of losing a few pounds weight is in order. If i had just purchased a proven [suposibly] design i,d be pissed.JMO

I would drive up to preston tomorrow and pick up your fix for this driveshaft. This site has me so paranoid about this sled..

I'm in and I know bout a dozen others in my area that would take one too, very serious, I can't have this fail where we ride.

Wow. You mustn't have much of an imagination when towing a sled. Always a pain but easily do able. You're gonna come up with a fix for Poo's weak spot and you can't figure out how to tow a dead sled ? Hmmmm.
 
Preseaon paranoia!

Ok, I think im going to quit reading this thread. I have a brand new pro rmk 800 sitting in my garage, between this and the drive belt threads i"m afraid to ride it! LOL. Enough with the preseason paranoia!!!!! We all need snow to keep us from freaking out. Maybe they will have some issues, maybe not. If they do hopefully Polaris does the right thing and steps up to the plate.
 
I agree that this rivet looks like a bad idea. I remember watching a buddy trim up some drivers on a old 03 edge and he barley nicked the hex shaft. that sled didnt make it 10 miles down the trail before it snapped in half. As for getting it out we took the shaft and rear skid out. rolled up the track and put the skid back in......makes a big boy runner sled that tows out really easy.

Im guessing that the 12 shaft is way different than this one as far as putting it in to fix this problem that everyone is having since we have no snow yet?
