Remodeler recessed lights

Guys:

I want to replace my 5" cans (2 of them) with 6" remodeler cans.

Those existing cans are probably nailed to the ceiling joice (The brackets are). I am not taking down the sheetrock to get to them, but I am going to enlarge the hole to a 6" opening.

Have not even pulled the trim rings off the "old" ones yet, and I think I am going to have a hard time getting those cans out. Any tips you guys might have for getting those suckers out without wrecking the sheetrock?

I am replacing these with 6" to match the other cans in this area of the ceiling.....

Thoughts?

Halo lighting makes a 6 or 7 inch remodel can Catalog # H7RICAT i think this is the one you want. The old ones will be a beech to get out but you can dimantle them to get to the brackets. is it between floors so you can't get to them from the attic?

Yep, these lights are between floors.

I guess the brackets would be just fine staying there. I just need enough room for the new wider light and the wiring arm.

I thought there might be some sort of trick in getting these out easily........

I thought I would cut the hole wider even before I pulled the old ones out to give me some wiggle room..

The top and sides of the can come apart so you can get your hand inside to remove the hanger bars or the can from the bars. just make sure to have enough wire to pull out so you can make the connection in the new cans before you slide them into place. making the hole bigger might help but you might do more damage to the sheet rock than you want.
