Recoil spring

Need some advice, starter rope on my edge broke end of the season, so pulled of the housing, removed the center bolt to install a new rope and out sprung the spring..... so anyone have a suggestion on how to reinstall the sucker?

Thanks much,

spring

They are a real fight. The new ones come coiled and wired from the factory. After you install them, you just cut the wire. You will need to do something similar. Problem is getting it wound tight enough to fit down in the housing. New spring is about $36.00 and may be worth the money, only problem is it may get away from you and then you would have 2 uncoiled.

The ones I have done I started coiling them and tied a piece of wire around them kind of loose. Lay it flat on the bench so you can keep it to gether then start winding.

It occures to me that you may be able to use a couple of pieces of plywood with a slot cut in them. Wire the inner end of the spring though a hole in the middle of the plywood. Add the top piece of plywood and tie it so it has a gap between the two pieces the wideth of the spring to keep the spring from jumping out of the coil. Wind it up tighter and tighter until it's small enough to fit in the housing. Use some saftey wire and tie it through the slots in the plywood. Now it's wound like the factory. Take it out of the plywood and drop it in and cut the safety wire.

Next time, you don't need to take it all apart to replace the rope. Just remove the old knot and intall the new rope. Then pull it up throught the knotch in the spool and wind it up untill you have good return on the rope.

Hard lessons.

Those springs can be a pain to wind up again. I've replaced my rope a couple times until I learned to buy the high strength Phantom rope!
I learned this from XCR1250 at hardcoresledder forums. Thanks for the info Don! Just passing it along. Saved a lot of time! It's now very simple.
"simply use a block of wood and 4 screws and the correct radius, use a compass to determine the circle, starting with the outer coils attach spring hook end on any screw and wind spring, once wound use 2 small tie wraps to hold spring and remove 2 opposing screws to remove spring, place spring in the recoil and cut tie wraps."
Also I found good cheap replacement rewind springs. Mine for my '03 Edge was $10. Hi-Performance Engineering
