PHOENIX - Thousands of people from around the U.S. marched to the Arizona state Capitol on Saturday to protest the state's tough new law cracking down on illegal immigration.

Opponents of the law suspended their boycott against Arizona and bused in protesters from around the country. Organizers said the demonstration could bring in as many as 50,000 people.

Midtown Phoenix buzzed with protesters carrying signs and American flags. Dozens of police officers were on standby along the route of the five-mile march, and helicopters hovered overhead.

Supporters of the law expect to draw thousands to a rally of their own Saturday evening at a baseball stadium in suburban Tempe, encouraging like-minded Americans to "buycott" Arizona by planning vacations in the state.

Critics of the law, set to take effect July 29, say it unfairly targets Hispanics and could lead to racial profiling. Its supporters say Arizona is trying to enforce immigration laws because the federal government has failed to do so.

The law requires that police conducting traffic stops or questioning people about possible legal violations ask them about their immigration status if there is "reasonable suspicion" that they're in the country illegally. Reasonable suspicion is not defined.

"Arizona has become the testing ground for the most draconian and anti-immigrant legislation in the country," said Pablo Alvarado, executive director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network.

Some opponents of the law have encouraged people to cancel conventions in the state and avoid doing business with Arizona-based companies, hoping the economic pressure forces lawmakers to repeal the law.

But Alfredo Gutierrez, chairman of the boycott committee of Hispanic civil rights group Somos America, said the boycott doesn't apply to people coming to resist the law. Opponents said they secured warehouse space for 5,000 people to sleep on cots instead of staying in hotels.

They're calling on President Barack Obama to order immigration authorities to refuse to take custody of illegal immigrants turned over under Arizona's law.

Supporters of the law sought to counteract the economic damage of boycotts by bringing supporters into the state.

"Arizona, we feel, is America's Alamo in the fight against illegal and dangerous entry into the United States," said Gina Loudon of St. Louis, who is organizing the "buycott."

"Our border guards and all of Arizona law enforcement are the undermanned, under-gunned, taxed-to-the-limit front-line defenders trying to hold back the invasion," she said.

The Alamo in San Antonio is the site of the famous 1836 battle where an outnumbered band of Texas defenders staged a legendary stand before Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his Mexican forces seized the mission. Texas gained its independence from Mexico weeks later in the victorious Battle of San Jacinto.

The law also makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally or to impede traffic while hiring day laborers, regardless of the worker's immigration status.

In San Francisco, groups planned to protest at the Arizona Diamondbacks' game against the Giants Saturday night.

Is another Alamo needed? Or should we just welcome them all in legal or not.

What would you do if you knew someone was in the country illegally and working the same which takes away from a citizen?

Well of course it's racial profiling. One wouldnt come upon an english speaking white man in a pressed suit and think he's here illegally. I really hate how people that share the same characteristics and beliefs of the people that founded this country have to hide those characteristics and beliefs for fear of being "politically incorrect" or offensive to others. That is so FRICKIN stupid considering this is a "free country" or whatever. If a white protestant male was doing something illegal but claimed it was for the good of his family/health/well being etc.... everyone would just slander him and send him to jail, but we should all be ashamed for wanting to send illegal immagrants back to where they came from. gimme a f*ckin break

We need to clean house so there are more jobs of the americans, president Eisenhower kicked off Opperation wet back, and sent millions of the illegals back after the war so we would have jobs for the boys coming home. Don't think we have to worrie about Obama doing anything like that.

12,000 well armed are needed on the arizona border, not 1200 desk jokeys to push pencils. obama knows whats going on and does virtuly nothing, VOTE this nov.

I think the profiling depends upon how the law is enforced / executed. It mostly depends upon the Arizona police and how they act.

Though, it gets tiring blaming all of this on illegal immagrants. Maybe if the greedy employers and business owners gave a crap, then they would hire Americans instead.

Supply and demand.. People forget that the demand is something we are in direct control of.

Coast to coast the overwhelming majority of americans are in favor of this bill, is it 100 percent perfect... no! does something need to be done... ABSOLUTELY!!!!

why not put this law into effect, see what happens, and go from there? maybe it would work better than most are thinking??? we wont know until we try! Maybe after its in effect we can learn how to improve on it as well perfecting it as we go?!?!?!

ILLEAGAL (<theres that word agin) immigration is a huge problem in this country and something needs to be done about it!

I have a friend who employs seasonal workers who bristles at the notion that it's the employers who create the demand. He checks what he is allowed to check before he hires anyone. That being said, he knows deep down some are posers. He says he will crack down as soon as the gov{state and FED} cut the entitlement programs that allow them to supplement their income with our tax dollars. Wonder why some can work so cheap? They are very well educated in the handout program. They no habla englis, but they know how to work the system. By the way my bud recognizes you get what u pay for and he pays well. My local tire shop chick told me a story about one of her employees who knew that he and his GF would get more money livin together and makin babies than if they were married. I live in an area that is growing the Hispanic population very quickly, and like most areas we got a lot of bad seeds. Just had an execution style gang shooting the other day. They circled the dude and while he begged for his life they loaded him up with lead. Hardly a week goes by without gang violence. These are 98 percent hispanic peeps and i'm being generous on the 2percent. Prolly a large percentage didn't come across the border the right way. Ya i'm tired of the crime, am i a racist? Ihope not, i just don't care for stupid people. I hate what gang violence and the drug trade have done to our area. At the end of the day illegal immigration brings baggage along and i've seen it most of my adult life [i'm old,almost55] I don't want to move, but i might. Rant over:face-icon-small-fro

Personally I think that China had the right idea with their little wall. Now just pour ours deep enough to be down to the water table, and 25 feet above ground with razor wire on top. Pay for it with cutting off all entitlement programs for Illegals.

Once that is finished, send the ones back who dont want to immigrate legally. Open season on those who still try to come across headed north.

Our ancestors came here legally, these schmucks can do it too.

Maybe we should try this
I dont know how far they have gotten on this one but its at least a step in the right direction. If you agree with the measure get your petitions printed and signed. There is less than a month left.

This a no brainer ! If the ask "Are you here legally" Than is a question of Geographic/notional origin so its NOT profilling/ racism If they asked if your a dirty wetback that MAY be.

If those euopean puzzies where better swimmers we would not even be having this discussion.

The best way to tell is look at who said it if thier white its ALWAYS racist !

How many people here carry proof of US citizenship?

How would you feel being detained, after being pulled over for a broken tail light, until you could provide this proof?

I couldn't see that happening to white people, but everyone else, it could be a possibility. As to carry proof of US citizenship? I don't, though maybe it is rules like this that make the case for having a National Citizenship card or something.

Generally "proof of citezenship " could be a valid drivers license expet that Welfare states like NM give Drivers licenses to illegals !:yell::yell:

It should be good enough ! Dont you agree? People who dont live or belong here should not have them . Correct?

If this where the case existeng laws would have been enforced and this new law and this dicussion would not happen in the first place

Illegals take from the tax base that I PAY INTO AND MOST DO NOT CONTRIBUTE! myself and a huge majority of the voters support laws like this racist or not because we are tired of our dollars supporting the worlds leftovers while our kids and elderly benefits are cut and cut again. Good bad or ugly the People of this country are politly saying( FOR NOW) help out or GTFO we have our own problems.
