Question about the Army???

So this guy that i'm dating has been really interested for the past two years about the Army and getting into special forces. he's already done the testing and has been accepted. He's deploy date would be march 14th. I think the recruiting is really filling his head with a bunch of crap! Everyone i have talked to says it's really not worth it. He'll be in just training for almost two years. i want to know if it really is worth it? Insight would be nice. everywhere i turn to try to get information it all ends up the same. So i want to know if anyone has actually been in the army and what they think?

Without people like him willing to risk it all to defend us, we would not be posting tonight. It builds boys into men. It will be the best thing he does in his life. it's worth it.

I had a buddy that was gung frikin' ho for special forces since he was about 10... He enlisted with that in mind... (For the record he was a studs "stud"). He said it was a whole lotta bullzhit!!.. He said them fuggers are just plain thwacked.

See that's what i thought. It is way honorable what he's doing but i definately think he has the wrong idea. I'm very proud of him for choosing this but also i'm scared that he's not rightfully informed.

Don't read me wrong though... I'm not ditzin' our armed forces at all! But he said there was a lot of stuff happen that would NEVER EVER be made public..

See and i know that because i've had friends that have been honorably discharged from BCT because they've been injured by instructors. Like my one friend joined the marines, and during h$ll week he had a superior throw a clothes locker at his legs and snapped them both! I'm just really nervous that he's going to be upset that he was misled about it all!

That kind of thing seldom happens anymore. It's tough but it is a kinder gentler military. The SFs do get a lot of extra "training" but abuse like that is rare anymore.

as long as he doesn't join some reserve unit. I did and that was a mistake...6 year enlistment and i spent 4 of them active haha. It will definitely build character and will open up oppurtunities on the civilian side. SF is gonna be tough to get into but the chit they do is unreal. No mistake about it, it will change him for the better. Support him whatever he decides to do, the worse thing you could do is criticsize him for wanting to do something that he really wants to do. About the comment on the marine breaking his legs...i guess he shouldnt have been standin there :)

just my .02

saying to live by when considering the military, DON'T BELIEVE IT UNTIL IT SEE IT and then, only believe 50% of that. lol

They will tell you what you want to hear to get you to join. Nothing is guaranteed! He may be/prolly is a stud, believe me a few guys I served with could run, hump (hiking but fast with lots of weight on your back) shoot, sneak, climb, crawl, swim, endure pain better me. We never made it in force recon. If he doesn't make SP he might end up in the grunts (infantry). Not that that's a bad thing, but I will tell you its not all the glamour movies, commericals and poster reflect. It will grow ya up real fast. I don't regret my 1460 day in green machine. I am proud that I served my county. just sayin! Good luck, Seriously!

SF is not that bad. Challenge yes. When I was in you had to have a minimum of 2 years active duty to apply for SF. Usually you get the same typical gung ho, spit shined soldier applying. Usually a Ranger or Ranger candidate type. If they make it you see difference within a year. They become more trained in maintaining a low profile so you see this super hardcore die hard soldier suddenly look and talk like a civillian or maybe a bit humble. Many grow their hair longer and even facial hair is acceptable. They constantly train and test new equipment. They get depolyed in a moments with a little as a phone call to their spouses if any at all is allowed and divorce rate is very high. Even when they are at school they are not free from their units trainig. I was at a Platooon Leaders Development Course and we had an SF Operator in our class that had 2 guys show up from his unit twice. Once they jerked him out of class and had him do a Physical Training test in the hallway. And another they showed up with a Rucksack in the early night and sent him out on a forced march until morning. Don't know if your boyfriend is going directly into SF. More than likely they are pushing him into a Ranger Unit or Infantry unit first. If he fails Ranger School he'll get pushed back to his original unit. If he is recruited directly into Ranger School if he fails he will be offered an infantry unit or retrining in a different MOS.

On another note Rangers, Airborne, Air Assault are NOT Special Forces. They all wish they were but they are not. They are trained for the primary task of capturing and securing Airfields. Special Forces is an infiltration unit, specializing in many tasks, such as sobotage, recon, prisoner capture, and all round F'ing Stuff up! Both will fight at a drop of a hat but SF teaches it's operators how to control themselves a bit better I think. Rangers seem to be more the young developing SF, getting into barfights, jumping off hotel roofs into pools etc.

It is not easy, few things that are rewarding are. I've know of 1 operator that left the Army to go work for a Contractor. Guys clearing $250-280k a year tax free with the only hitch that he cannot spend more than 15 days on US soil or he pays taxes. So when He takes leave he and his wife went to Fiji at the companys expense. He takes off for 6 months comes home to pick up his wife for vacation for a few days and then comes back to drop her off and then leaves again for another 6.

There;s a reason you don't mess with the kinda crazy lookin quiet guy at the bar... happens every time.

somethin to think about too

CB

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I had always wondered why nobody ever phucks with me.

Thanks for all the input guys but we just got the news he can't go in because he's had 11 surgeries on his ear and has a permanent hole in his eardrum so they won't accept him. If any of you know Dick Nourse channel 5 news for utah that's his dad so he has major connections so they're going to the Pentagon to dispute the decision! So i don't know what's going to happen from here but i know he's pretyy bummed out about it.

I can say i'm kind of happy now but i'm definitley sad that he's upset about it. But yeah he passed everything with flying colors to go straight into SF. They said they want him to train to be a target locator or something like that. It's where they have to mark the target and hold position until told to bail!

Don't know about the army, but I can tell you first hand about navy seals.

Yes the training is insane. People get hurt. I know of a couple that have been killed in the training. They go thru stuff that would give you nightmares for months. It would push him to the point of calapse, both mentally and physically. The trainers will be crule beyond measure. They will make you feel worse than at any time in your life.

And if/when you graduate you will thank them for every minute of it.
They don't call em special forces for nothing.
They take missions that would make a normal man faint. They have to be the toughest of the tough. They have to be able to stay awake and funtion at full capacity for a couple days at a time. They have to be willing and ABLE to do what every it takes to complete the mission.

Upon completion of the course, you would have a man that knows for a fact there is nothing in life he can't complete. He will have confidence in his ability to adapt to any cituation in both military and civilian life.

People that have never experienced the extreme pride a person feels upon completion of a special forces designation, no offence, but you would never understand.

I'm sot so sure he has a career in SF. I think there would be too much risk he would have problems equlizing pressure say for example high altitude Halo Jumping or scuba diving. That's not even to say if he were exposed to the air pressure of explosives detonation nearby or even being nearby a .50 Cal. He is probably more succeptible to further damage more easily and could be considered a mission risk. If he passed the tests maybe he should apply as a contractor. Many train their own guys and may still take him. Check out Blackwaters homepage.
