Pyramid-Greenwater

Taking the kids up tomorrow. just wondering if anyone who has been up recently can advise if they are still parking down low and riding up to the snow park. thanks!

Still parking down low unfortunately and the area in front of the shooting range is melted out. Today's sun will only expand the thin and bare sections so it's time for them to move the snowpark up.

On the plus side though, the road was groomed nicely yesterday.

Yep you're right Dan , was hoping the FS would be there when we got back as I was going to tell them to put their big boy pants on and open the gate.
No reason for leaving the gate closed could drive my truck dang near to the top in these conditions!

gate is closed because groomers want it that way but only 100 ft is not bad and road was groomed great and with more snow on the way it should be good again for next week, some pict's of sat

Well I hope the groomer only wants the gate shut so he has access to 7030 from the west side.
If it's for any other reason I would love to here that.

I know he is on here and reads these, and is on this post right now, maybe he'll chime in!

And yes , let me say this, he has done an awesome job this year! For me, and many others , it's just brutal have to ride an extra 14 miles of road every time. I'd rather drive it and have more fuel for riding up top.

Me to as this is one of the reasons I haven't been to Greenwater this year. The grooming quality appears to be Improved, great! The parking is silly and then there's the 20 (or so) mile ride in and out.

I agree with you as I like parking in upper parking lot also and always go early to get better parking and avoid people stuck on 12 deg hill also was wondering if I was going to make it back sat with 91 miles on sled and no fuel bars left , but soon enough we will be parking at y then uppr gravel pit and so on but lots of snow showing for next week. also hope this year groomer opens uppr gate when we start seeing gravel beyond uppr gate.

Love it

The complaining is incredible. This is like hikers complaining that they can't park right next to the hiking trails. YOU ARE THERE TO SNOWMOBILE and you are complaining that you can't drive your truck farther and you have to snowmobile.

If they open the gate this early and plow small storms (like today) will cause a complete mess on the Matterhorn because people (sledders and nonsledders both) will be unprepared.

I would MUCH rather park below and avoid chaining up/rigs in the ditch.

Either way you're going to complain so I don't know why i try. :face-icon-small-win

I agree. Plus you can cover the Matterhorn 4 times faster on a sled. Plus who really needs that much more fuel. It's Greenwater, not Gallagher. The extra mileage is like 10 minutes each way.

Lol. This is funny cause in Taneum weve been begging to have them put up a gate to stop the mommy tahoes from trying to drive up the groomed trails so little billy and molly can go sleding wihout walking or getting cold.

Watched Kittias Sherriff pull a lady out saturday (made it 50' up the 5030 groomed trail in her new tahoe) and then nicely handed her a ticket after asking her what she was thinking as we all rode by shaking our heads.

Oh well.

I'll speak for myself.
I do not like the f$&@)(g gate because it's a gate. There's many other riding areas in this state that have access roads covered in snow and ice and have steep hills and sharp corners. They are still driveable and have been all year with similar snow and ice conditions. For me, it has nothing to do with anything you assumed. I'd rather police myself and drive if it's possible or not, period. I also don't have a trail sled built for road riding, which is what is needed a lot of times at GW. And lastly, you won't find me on a hiking trail either, I'll find my way without. Carry on with your assumptions of the others that don't see it your way. Cheers!

I didnt want to chime in but I guess I will

Just for info, this has been a big snow year at greenwater, snow down low all season, ( very rare ), We simply do not have enough money in the plowing contract to keep the by pass open. We barely had enough to plow the road into the current snow park, just the facts folks. We put the majority of our money in this area to grooming the trails. You have to also remember , sure a lot of us are well equipped , good tires , vehicles ect and can handle the Matterhorn. But this is a family friendly area and a lot of people just have regular rigs with street tires. We dont want to discourage them from coming but the facts are when they do come they spin out, hit the guard rail and block the road for the rest of us. I personally like having the gate closed and parking down low. Its fast and easy. The grooming has been great this year. It's litteraly about an 8 minute run from the low snopark to the upper one on a snowmobile, You burn very little gas and its safe for everyone. Remember we have to think of the big picture that this is a public snopark paid for by snowmobilers no matter what kind of riders or drivers they are. Just my 2 cents worth

Yup.
And no moms with their Tahoes in our ditches.

Thanks Dan - that's all I was really asking for was an explanation as-to why.
Doesn't mean I have to like it but at least I know why now.
In years past, I have heard that the FS wanted it closed and that's the way it was.

Here is something to be aware of too, and I have heard of break-ins the last few years up there. A freind of a freinds truck got broken into last week up there,. Popped the door lock, and relieved him of his valuables, and alarm was going off.

I think , in my opinion, that it is easier access for the hoodlums when the gate is closed, because like Dan said , they can get there on there street tires. If they have to get over the bypass and go to the end they probably won't bother, or make it for that matter.

Less to worry about in that respect if the gate is open.
Again , just my opinion.

^^^^ Yep, they can borrow their mom's Tahoe and be outa there and on the hwy in minutes.

greenwater

rode yesterday afternoon
only one set of tracks no one in the parking lot
fresh untracked snow all the way up to cabin !!
sorry guys we tore it up !!!! 3 feet of fresh in places
meet the groomer on the way back down :)
high speed carpet ride back to the truck !!
im guessing they started to lock the lower gate because of all the stupid people the last couple years taking their kids sledding on the main road and making it a cluster f__ck to drive up there

I heard about a brake in, dang thievs

TNT, ya thats the one thing I Do Not like about parking down low, very accessable to the friggin criminals, I know its only a matter of time before it happens to me, I'm going to be really pissed for sure, As much riding as we do up there year round,

Yep - I worry about it all the time, especially since I have had two of my vehicles broken into years ago out here. Like you said, matter of time I guess. I don't leave anything of valuable or in sight in my truck and if I have something I'll put it in the trailer. Wallet, keys, and phone go with me in my backpack.

I came out here from Montana 20+ years ago where people left their doors unlocked, keys in car, and seldom locked the doors on their house! Sure it's not that way there anymore with all of the meth problems they have now!
