Public restrooms on trails?!

OK, not sure if this is just a situation here where I ride(in the NorthEast), or everywhere. And, some of you guys might not be real concerned, but this situation arose last year when riding in Eastern New York state. My guy friend and I(am a woman rider) went for long riding weekend about a hour from where we live-have to trailer everything, get hotel, breakfast, lunch, dinner out, etc.-in genereal spend a lot of $. On second day of riding, stopped for fuel at a Mom and Pop convenience store/gas station. Thought to myself, good time to stop, use restroom and chocolate fix...get to door of store....and "Restrooms not for Public Use". Was a little confused and ticked off to say the least. At least a dozen sleds lined up at fuel pumps and spending $ in store, and to see that sign. Just didn't seem like they were real concerned about their image to tourists among other things. Please try not to convince me to suck it up if I want to ride-not the point here. Places want us to spend our $ but don't really provide all things tourists may need/desire. Is this common any where else?

Did you every ask to use the restroom?

Many places I have been will have a sign that says, "Restrooms not for Public Use" but once you pay you become a customer. The sign is there to warn off the non paying - as far as my experience tells me.

Gas stations? 8,000ft up in the mountains, where, I didn't see it. Musta blinked.

Unfortunately there are no restrooms here in S.W Montana unless you're in the parking lot, and that's only sometimes! I usually have to go find a tree to do my business with!

Cant say that we have run into that when out sledding but have had it happen a couple times when out on the bike... I have asked and as said above, once I am a customer I am welcome to use the restroom. Only once were we told no... didnt buy fuel or drinks and rode onto the next place, never stopped there again.

Don't take this as gospel but I believe that in NYS if you serve food you have to have a public restroom.
Should have asked and played the desperate need card anyway:)

We have lots of public rest rooms.
Millions of em.
They are called trees. ;)
Wife rides with me every trip, the only actual restrooms are the ones at the lodge which we hit at the end of the day for a hot meal.
Other than that, tp and a tree.
